Charge Density Evolution Governing Interfacial Friction

Junhui Sun et al.

Summary: It is still an open question for the surface/interface community to understand the general rules of electron coupling that govern interfacial friction, although the electron nature of a solid in contact plays a predominant role in determining the many properties of the contact systems. In this study, density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the physical origins of friction of solid interfaces. The results reveal that interfacial friction can be traced back to the electronic barrier to the change in the contact configuration of the joints in slip due to the resistance of energy level rearrangement leading to electron transfer.

Fluctuation of Interfacial Electronic Properties Induces Friction Tuning under an Electric Field

Aisheng Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tuning of friction by an electric current in a conductive atomic force microscopy experiment, revealing two main mechanisms: electric-field-induced electron density redistribution and current-induced electron transfer. The proposed electronic level friction model provides theoretical guidance for designing and controlling tribosystems, offering a new perspective in understanding the origin of friction.

Two-dimensional g-C6N6/SiP-GaS van der Waals heterojunction for overall water splitting under visible light

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel g-C6N6/SiP-GaS van der Waals heterojunction was designed and its structural, optoelectronic, and photocatalytic properties were systematically investigated. The results showed that the heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance and could be modulated by strain.

Friction of Ti3C2Tx MXenes

Peter Serles et al.

Summary: This study reveals the friction mechanisms of 2D Ti3C2Tx MXenes, showing that their lubrication behavior is determined by the surface termination species. MXenes do not exhibit friction layer dependence like other 2D materials, and annealing leads to a reduction in friction of 16-57%. Additionally, MXene flakes demonstrate stability upon isolation from their aqueous environment.

Two dimensional materials are non-nanotoxic and biocompatible towards cyclotides: evidence from classical molecular dynamics simulations

Anupam Ghosh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption properties of Cyclotides on graphene and h-BN, revealing that Cyclotides maintain their structural integrity upon adsorption. The aggregated states of Cyclotides are also preserved during the adsorption process. Free energy calculations show moderate adsorption strength, with larger aggregates resulting in weaker binding of individual peptides with the 2D materials.

Molecular Mechanism for the Self-Supported Synthesis of Graphitic Carbon Nitride from Urea Pyrolysis

Titas Kumar Mukhopadhyay et al.

Summary: Quantum chemical calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations were used to investigate the kinetics of one-pot synthesis of two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride from urea pyrolysis. Two possible mechanisms were considered, with the pathway involving ammelide being preferred. The size, shape, density, and defects of the grids, as well as the relationship between rate constants and local reaction sites, play important roles in the formation of the extended g-C3N4 structures.

Designing C6N6/C2N van der Waals heterostructures for photogenerated charge carrier separation

Moumita Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic water splitting mechanism based on two-dimensional catalyst materials, such as the C6N6/C2N heterostructure, has been studied. The interface potential drop and band edge positions facilitate efficient charge transfer, higher hole mobility, and prevention of recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. The combination of wide band gap semiconductor (C6N6) with a moderate band gap semiconductor (C2N) allows for efficient harnessing of solar energy for water splitting in the visible region.
