Correlating Reaction Dynamics and Size Change during the Photomechanical Transformation of 9-Methylanthracene Single Crystals

Kohei Morimoto et al.

Summary: High-quality single crystals of 9-methylanthracene exhibit more homogeneous reaction kinetics compared to polycrystalline samples, resulting in a linear expansion correlated with reaction progress. This class of solid-state phase change material shows clear linear expansion during 100% photoconversion, demonstrating potential for actuation applications.

Multistimuli-Responsive Dynamic Effects in a One-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: The rational combination of suitable functionalities in single crystalline materials has led to the development of multistimuli-receptive actuators. The one-dimensional coordination polymer fabricated in this study displays all dynamic effects of photo-, thermo-, and mechano-responsiveness, paving the way for designing multisalient actuating materials.

Photoreactive Crystals Exhibiting [2+2] Photocycloaddition Reaction and Dynamic Effects

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: Conducting reactions in the solid state without solvents allows for structural characterization through single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Single-crystal to single-crystal reactions are commonly observed in [2+2] cycloaddition reactions, and the principles of crystal engineering can be applied to achieve desired reactivities and physical properties. Photoreactions in the solid state exhibit regio- and stereospecificity and yield quantitative photoproducts. Dynamic crystals that undergo mechanical responses to light or heat energy have emerged as smart actuating materials.

Programming Rapid Functional Group Diversification into a Solid-State Reaction: Aryl Nitriles for Self-Assembly, Click Reactivity, and Discovery of Coexisting Supramolecular Synthons

Changan Li et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method to rapidly diversify the molecules formed in organic crystals by using aryl nitriles as both hydrogen-bond acceptors and modifiable organic groups. The discovery of coexisting supramolecular synthons in the same crystal is also described. The method is demonstrated using a bis(aryl nitrile) alkene that undergoes a hydrogen-bond-directed intermolecular [2+2] photodimerization to form a tetra(aryl nitrile)cyclobutane. The product can be easily converted by click reactivity to a tetra(aryl tetrazole) or by hydrolysis to a tetra(aryl carboxylic acid). The integration of aryl nitriles into solid-state reactions opens up broad avenues for the post-modification of products formed in crystalline solids for rapid diversification.

Supramolecular construction of a cyclobutane ring system with four different substituents in the solid state

Michael A. Sinnwell et al.

Summary: Rare and challenging, the preparation of cyclobutanes with four different substituents has been achieved through a cocrystallisation strategy enabling [2+2] cross-photoreaction of non-symmetrical stilbene derivatives to yield chiral tetrasubstituted cyclobutanes with up to four different substituents in quantitative yield.
