Visible Light-Triggered Radical Annulation of ortho-Thioaryl Ynones: A General Approach to Prepare 3-Sulfenylthiochromones

Ricardo H. Bartz et al.

Summary: A visible light-mediated protocol for the construction of 3-sulfenylthiochromenones was developed using a radical annulation of ortho-thioaryl ynones. The reaction proceeds through a sulfur-centered radical generated by light excitation of an intramolecular electron donor-acceptor complex (EDA complex). Twenty-one compounds were synthesized in yields ranging from 28% to 98%, with sixteen of them unprecedented. The reactions were conducted under open-air conditions without the need for metal catalysts, oxidant species, or heating, providing a mild and environmentally friendly approach to access valuable compounds.

Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.
