Bis(1-Methyl-ortho-Carboranyl)Borane

Manjur O. Akram et al.

Summary: This passage describes a Lewis superacid called bis(1-methyl-ortho-carboranyl)borane, which can be rapidly synthesized in two steps. It is a highly effective hydroboration reagent capable of B-H addition to alkenes, alkynes, and cyclopropanes. To date, it is the first identified Lewis superacidic secondary borane and the most reactive neutral hydroboration reagent.

Summary: The spectra of methanesulfonic acid (CH3SO3H, MSA) and its complex with water were studied using microwave spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The monomer exhibited a pair of tunneling states attributed to motion of the hydroxyl hydrogen. The tunneling energy was determined for the -OD form, but not the parent form, and the complex with water formed a cyclic structure typical of hydrated oxyacids.

The Effect of Carborane Substituents on the Lewis Acidity of Boranes

Manjur O. Akram et al.

Summary: The Lewis acidity of primary, secondary, and tertiary boranes with phenyl, pentafluorophenyl, and all three isomers of the icosahedral carboranes was studied by calculating their affinities for fluoride, hydride, and ammonia, as well as their electrophilicity indices and LUMO energies. It was found that the substituent effects on Lewis acidity followed the trend of ortho-carborane > meta-carborane > para-carborane > C6F5 > C6H5.

Hydrogen Activation by Frustrated and Not So Frustrated Lewis Pairs Based on Pyramidal Lewis Acid 9-Boratriptycene: A Computational Study

Anna V. Pomogaeva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural features and reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) composed of pyramidal group 13 Lewis acids and bulky phosphines. Different systems were analyzed, and it was found that classic FLPs and donor-acceptor (DA) complexes can be formed. The activation energy and reaction pathways for hydrogen activation were also studied, and it was observed that heterolytic hydrogen splitting is favorable in solution. The Lewis acidity of the Lewis acids can be tuned by changing the substituents, which allows for control over their reactivity with hydrogen. The DA complex B(C6H4)3CH center dot PtBu3 shows promise for reversible heterolytic hydrogen splitting due to its low activation energy and thermodynamic reversibility.

Tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane: An Isolable, Halogen-Free, Lewis Superacid

Manjur O. Akram et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a single site neutral Lewis superacid, tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane (BoCb(3)), was achieved in one pot from commercially available materials. It was confirmed to be a Lewis superacid due to its high fluoride ion affinity (FIA), and exhibited stronger Lewis acidity compared to widely used fluorinated aryl boranes, as evidenced by the Gutmann-Beckett method and adducts with Lewis bases. The unusually high Lewis acidity can be rationalized by the electron-withdrawing effect of ortho-carborane and lack of pi-delocalization of the LUMO. Catalytic studies demonstrated that BoCb(3) is a superior catalyst for promoting C-F bond functionalization reactions compared to tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6F5)(3)].

Caralumane Superacids of Lewis and Bronsted Character

Jakub Brzeski et al.

Summary: Carborane Bronsted superacids are useful reagents in organic and inorganic synthetic processes. In this study, caralumane analogs were studied using ab initio electronic structure tools. The Lewis acid strengths of the caralumane species exceed the threshold for labeling them as Lewis superacids, and the deprotonation Gibbs free energies are small enough for them to be Bronsted superacids. Bonding of HF, HCl, or HH to caralumane Lewis acids to form Bronsted acids results in different structures and energies, with HH forming two novel low-energy structures that are Bronsted superacids.

Energy decomposition analyses show that FLPs and classical adducts can be differentiated by the ratio of covalent-to-noncovalent contributions to the total interaction energy.
