Quantitative Electromerism of a Well-defined Mononuclear Copper Complex Through Reversible Intramolecular Metal-Ligand Electron Transfer

Johanna Osterbrink et al.

Summary: Copper amine oxidases are enzymes that exhibit a mononuclear copper complex and a 2,4,5-trihydroxyphenylalanine quinone cofactor. They regulate their activity through a temperature-dependent electron transfer equilibrium. The study reports the first mononuclear copper complex with reversible electromerism between a Cu-II electromer and a Cu-I electromer. Solvent has a significant effect on this electromerism.

Homoconjugation effects in triptycene based organic optoelectronic materials

Jai-Ram Mistry et al.

Summary: Molecular size and shape greatly influence the electronic structure and photophysical properties of organic optoelectronic molecules. Small structural changes can fine tune the functionalities of these molecules, while enforcing homoconjugation can have even more significant effects. Triptycene, as an archetypical homoconjugated molecule, provides insights into optimizing functional molecular properties. This review highlights the enhanced optoelectronic properties of triptycene-based molecules and discusses their performance and future potential in devices.

Kira I. Pashanova et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the coordination compounds of late transition metals based on sterically hindered functionalized o-iminobenzoquinone type ligands. It discusses the relationship between structural modifications and magnetic behavior, as well as the effect of molecular structure transformations on the oxidation state, spin state multiplicity, and redox state of the metal center and organic ligands.

Solvent-Induced Redox Isomerism of Cobalt Complexes with Redox-Active Bisguanidine Ligands

Lukas Lohmeyer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the redox properties of cobalt complexes with redox-active bisguanidine ligands, and fine-tuning of the electronic structure is achieved through systematic modifications at the ligand units. The first observation of redox isomerism for cobalt complexes with redox-active guanidine ligands is reported.

Redox-active ligands for chemical, electrochemical, and photochemical molecular conversions

Akinobu Nakada et al.

Summary: The hybridization of functional ligands with metal atoms is a central issue in the design of reactions and catalysts based on metal complexes. Recent studies have shown that redox-active/non-innocent ligands can play various roles, such as spectators, moderators, electron/H+/0/- suppliers/poolers, cooperators, or actors, in reactions. This review highlights stoichiometric or catalytic reactions driven by substituted ethylenes and dithiolenes, as well as six-membered ligands like catecholato, benezendithiolato, aminophenolato, and o-phenelyenediamine derivatives. The chemically, electrochemically, and photochemically induced lability of these ligands is expected to provide a rich platform for useful bond-activation and bond-formation processes.

Stimulation of Redox-Induced Electron Transfer by Interligand Hydrogen Bonding in a Cobalt Complex with Redox-Active Guanidine Ligand

Lukas Lohmeyer et al.

Summary: Octahedrally coordinated cobalt(II) complexes with redox-active bisguanidine ligands and acac co-ligands were synthesized and their redox chemistry was analyzed in detail. The formation of hydrogen bonds between the N-H functions of the bisguanidine ligands and the acac co-ligands significantly influenced the redox chemistry, providing examples of metal-centered and ligand-centered oxidation pathways.

Summary: The study shows that by replacing auxiliary ligands, the redox chemistry of the complex and its properties can be significantly altered. The control over the redox states and understanding the changes in magnetic and optical properties allow for rational applications in catalysis and materials science. Further analysis with quantum-chemical calculations helps in understanding the electronic structures and redox isomers.
