Understanding MOF Flexibility: An Analysis Focused on Pillared Layer MOFs as a Model System

Irena Senkovska et al.

Summary: Flexible porous frameworks are a cutting-edge area of materials research due to their ability to adaptively open and close pores induced by chemical and physical stimuli, offering a wide range of functions. However, the factors influencing the switchability are still poorly understood, including the role of building blocks, crystal size, defects, cooperativity, and host-guest interactions. This review discusses an integrated approach using idealized model materials to systematically investigate and understand the critical factors affecting framework dynamics, leading to progress in their understanding and application.

Covert MOF-Based Photoluminescent Tags via Tunable Linker Energetics

Jacob Deneff et al.

Summary: Optical anticounterfeiting tags utilize the photoluminescent properties of materials to encode unique patterns for identification and validation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on polynuclear rare earth clusters are ideal materials for this purpose due to their fine control over structure and composition. In this study, we designed and synthesized heterometallic MOFs using Eu, Nd, and Yb with a specific linker. The resulting optical tags have multiple covert elements, with invisible emissions from Eu and infrared emissions from Nd and Yb. We also discovered a previously unobserved 11-metal cluster correlated with the presence of Yb in the MOFs. These materials demonstrate great potential as intricate optical tags and highlight the importance of linker selection in controlling their photoluminescent properties.

Adaptive response of a metal-organic framework through reversible disorder-disorder transitions

S. Ehrling et al.

Summary: Porous metal-organic frameworks are excellent candidates for gas storage, separation, catalysis, and sensing due to their ultrahigh porosity and varied functionalities. Some frameworks have the ability to open their pores to specific guests and switch between two stability minima, enabling highly selective separation. A recent study showed a metal-organic framework based on nonlinear linkers can adopt a complex family of degenerate disordered configurations through guest exchange.
