(±)-cis-4a-alkyl-1,3,4,4a,9,9a-hexahydro-2H-carbazol-2-ones by domino nitro reduction-aza-Michael addition to enones

Samuel J. Embrey et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the domino nitro reduction-aza-Michael addition sequence for ketones and compared with the reaction for esters. The closure of ketones did not perform as well as esters due to their higher reactivity. However, by adjusting the reaction conditions, a synthesis of six-membered ring compounds with good yields was achieved. The products showed some strain, but the yields were acceptable.

Enabling Reductive C-N Cross-Coupling of Nitroalkanes and Boronic Acids by Steric Design of P(III)/P(V)=O Catalysts

Gen Li et al.

Summary: An organophosphorus-catalyzed C-N bond-forming reductive coupling of nitroalkanes with arylboronic acids and esters has been reported. The method exhibits excellent chemoselectivity for the nitro/boronic acid substrate pair, facilitating the synthesis of functionally-rich N-(hetero)arylamines. The identification of a sterically reduced phosphetane catalyst enables the productive coupling in the P(III)/P(V)=O redox manifold, by affecting post-rate-limiting steps and avoiding deleterious side-paths.

Hydroxylamine-Derived Reagent as a Dual Oxidant and Amino Group Donor for the Iron-Catalyzed Preparation of Unprotected Sulfinamides from Thiols

Sayanti Chatterjee et al.

Summary: An iron catalyzed reaction has been developed for the selective transformation of thiols to sulfinamides by a direct transfer of -O and free -NH2 groups. It operates under mild conditions, exhibits broad functional group tolerance, and does not require precious metal catalysts or additional oxidants. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest the role of the alcoholic solvent as an oxygen atom donor.

Controlling Selectivity in the Synthesis of Z-α,β-Unsaturated Amidines by Tuning the N-Sulfonyl Group in a Rhodium(II) Catalyzed 1,2-H Shift

Matthew L. Martin et al.

Summary: N-2-Sulfonyl-alpha-diazo amidines can be synthesized through the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction with excellent regioselectivity. The use of electron poor nitrobenzenesulfonyl group and large carboxylate rhodium ligands allows for controlling the outcome and selecting for 1,2-H shift, resulting in high yielding and excellent Z-selectivity of alpha,beta-unsaturated amidines.

Cross-Coupling Reactions of Nitroarenes

Myuto Kashihara et al.

Summary: Cross-coupling reactions using nitroarenes as electrophiles have gained attention due to their ease of accessibility and potential advantages over haloarenes. Recent research has focused on developing new catalyst systems and reaction conditions to improve the efficiency and practicality of these reactions, with promising results in diversifying bond-forming reactions and reducing catalyst loading. Research in this field is expected to continue growing as the utility of nitroarenes in organic synthesis is reevaluated.

Asymmetric Synthesis of 2-Arylindolines and 2,2-Disubstituted Indolines by Kinetic Resolution

Anthony Choi et al.

Summary: The kinetic resolution of 2-arylindolines was achieved by reacting N-tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) derivatives with n-butyllithium and sparteine, followed by electrophilic quenching. The study demonstrated that the rate of Boc rotation was fast and the enantioselectivity of the products could be controlled by the chiral ligand used. The enantioenriched products were successfully converted to 2,2-disubstituted compounds without significant loss in enantiopurity.
