Rapid synthesis of drug-encapsulated films by evaporation-induced self-assembly for highly-controlled drug release from biomaterial surfaces

C. Stewart et al.

Summary: Infection at the surgical site for dental implants can cause various problems, such as failed procedures and patient discomfort. Traditional drug loading techniques for implant coatings often result in insufficient drug load and short release kinetics. This study explores the use of mesoporous silica films as coatings for implants to store and release antimicrobial drugs. The experiment demonstrates the successful incorporation and controlled release of the antimicrobial drug octenidine dihydrochloride (OCT) in silica films. The results show that the synthesis parameters significantly affect the structure, drug incorporation, and release rates of the films. The OCT-silica films exhibit the potential to effectively inhibit bacterial growth and can release drugs for an extended period of time.

Effect of surface chemistry on the uptake of lignin-derived aromatic molecules on ordered mesoporous silica

Peter J. Miller et al.

Summary: A series of functionalized ordered mesoporous silica materials were synthesized and tested for their ability to uptake lignin-derived molecules from dilute aqueous solutions. The study found that materials functionalized with hydrophobic groups exhibited lower uptake, while samples with intermediate wetting properties displayed superior uptake abilities. Furthermore, materials such as Oasis HLB and as-made MCM-41 showed higher uptake rates, suggesting potential new routes for designing hybrid materials for selective removal of lignin derivatives.
