General and Robust Photothermal-Heating-Enabled High-Efficiency Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Bing He et al.

Summary: The performance of photoanodes in PEC water splitting can be significantly enhanced by sandwiching a photothermal Co3O4 layer between a BiVO4 film and an FeOOH/NiOOH electrocatalyst sheet. This strategy improves light absorption, charge transfer, and water oxidation kinetics simultaneously, leading to superior photocurrent density and efficiency. The use of a variety of metal sulfides, nitrides, and phosphides as heaters can also yield high-performance photoanodes.

Enhancement of the Photocurrent of a Single Photosystem I Complex by the Localized Plasmon of a Gold Nanorod

Ryotaro Furuya et al.

Summary: By combining conductive atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confocal fluorescence microscopy, researchers measured photocurrents passing through single trimeric photosystem I (PSI) complexes near single gold nanorods (AuNRs). The study revealed that localized plasmons can enhance photocurrents and provided deeper insight into molecular mechanisms of plasmon-enhanced phenomena.

Plasmonic photothermal catalysis for solar-to-fuel conversion: current status and prospects

Shunqin Luo et al.

Summary: Solar-to-fuel conversion through photocatalytic processes is a promising technology that can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support sustainable development. Plasmonic catalysts can utilize visible and infrared light to enhance the efficiency of solar-to-fuel conversion. By mediating catalytic reactions, plasmonic catalysts can facilitate thermodynamically uphill reactions converting CO2 and/or H2O into valuable products.
