Ordered Heteroatom Siting Preserved by B/Al Exchange in Zeolites

Christian Schroeder et al.

Summary: The borosilicate zeolites can be converted to aluminosilicates through reaction with aluminum nitrate solution. The process of removing boron atoms is inhibited, possibly due to the Lewis acidic nature of aluminum ions. The positions of aluminum in the crystal structures were determined through computational and experimental methods, and it was found that aluminum insertion occurs at the boron sites. This approach can be used to create aluminosilicate zeolite catalysts with ordered active sites.

Controlling Nucleation Pathways in Zeolite Crystallization: Seeding Conceptual Methodologies for Advanced Materials Design

Rishabh Jain et al.

Summary: This article discusses methods for altering zeolite nucleation through seed-assisted protocols and designing advanced materials by exploiting interzeolite transformations. By introducing crystalline seeds in complex growth media used to synthesize zeolites, wide-ranging effects on the physicochemical properties of the final product can be observed. The article also highlights recent breakthroughs in seed-assisted syntheses of nanosized and hierarchical materials, and identifies shortcomings in developing generalized guidelines for predicting synthesis outcomes.

Synthesis of the Zeolites from SBU: An SSZ-13 Study

Kinga Mlekodaj et al.

Summary: Zeolite SSZ-13 was successfully synthesized by interzeolite conversion of zeolites X, A, and ZSM-5. Si-29 MAS NMR spectroscopy was used to monitor Si(4Al) and Si(1Si, 3Al) species, while the ion exchange capacity to Co(II) ions was employed to track the transfer of secondary building units (SBU) and (SiAl) sequences from parent X and A zeolites to the structure of SSZ-13. It was found that a significant fraction of transferred (SiAl) sequences formed chains with at least five T atoms containing three Al atoms, leading to a decrease in ion exchange capacity.
