Direct Growth of Uniform Bimetallic Core-Shell or Intermetallic Nanoparticles on Carbon via a Surface-Confinement Strategy for Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Mingzhen Hu et al.

Summary: Due to the surface inhomogeneity, it is challenging to directly grow uniform bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) on solid supports with controllable structure and size. In this study, a surface-confinement strategy was utilized to prepare ultrafine bimetallic Pt-M NPs (M(sic)Fe, Cu, and Co) with core-shell or intermetallic compounds structure on an N functionalized carbon support (NC). The N species on NC support can disperse metal cations, facilitating uniform nucleation and growth of bimetallic NPs. Moreover, N-mediation confines metal transfer to a narrow region on NC, resulting in localized particle growth and formation of ultrafine bimetallic NPs. The Pt3Fe NPs on NC exhibited excellent catalytic activity and durability for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction.

Tuning atomically precise metal nanocluster mediated photoelectrocatalysis via a non-conjugated polymer

Bo Tang et al.

Summary: In recent years, metal nanoclusters have shown great potential in solar energy conversion due to their unique atomic stacking arrangements and quantum size effect. However, their short carrier lifetimes and poor stabilities have hindered the development of robust metal nanocluster-based photosystems. In this study, a multilayered photoanode with a highly efficient spatially directional charge transport pathway was designed using positively charged poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) and tailor-made negatively charged l-glutathione-capped Ag-x nanoclusters. This design achieved enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance under visible light irradiation by reducing charge recombination and prolonging carrier lifetime.

Surface-Confined Synthesis of Ultrafine Pt-Rare Earth Nanoalloys on N-Functionalized Supports

Mingzhen Hu et al.

Summary: This study presents a surface-confined strategy for preparing ultrafine Pt-rare earth nanoalloys on N-functionalized supports. By coordinating surface N-metal, the metal cations are atomically dispersed on the support, facilitating uniform nucleation and growth of particles. Moreover, the moderate metal transfer barrier from N ensures confined particle growth, resulting in the formation of ultrafine nanoalloys.
