Dynamic Evolving Exothermicity Steers Ultrafast Formation of a Correlated Triplet Pair State

Yishi Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, an unconventional SF system with excited-state aromaticity was investigated using time-resolved spectroscopy. The authors found that the population transfer occurs by a time-dependent exothermic process driven by coherent coupling between electronic and spin degrees of freedom, leading to the formation of free triplets. These findings provide important insights into the SF mechanism and can guide the development of efficient and stable SF materials for practical applications.

Intrinsic Photostability in Dithiolonaphthalimide Achieved by Disulfide Bond-Induced Excited-State Quenching

Zeming Wang et al.

Summary: Disulfide bridges in proteins exhibit excellent photostability, while the cleavage and reforming dynamics of disulfide bonds in aromatic compounds are affected by the rigid chemical structure. In this study, the effect of disulfide modification on the excited-state deactivation mechanism was investigated using a model compound with a disulfide five-membered-ring structure. It was found that the excellent photostability was achieved through ultrafast excited-state quenching induced by the S-S stretching, instead of the cleavage of the disulfide bond.

Quantifying Exciton Transport in Singlet Fission Diblock Copolymers

Guiying He et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is an important mechanism for exciton multiplication in organic chromophores. Understanding its dynamics in block copolymers (BCPs) is crucial for designing effective optoelectronic devices. In this study, we designed diblock copolymers with a specific structure to facilitate exciton transport along the BCP chain. By quantifying the yields of key energy transfer steps, we gained valuable insights into exciton transport at critical length scales between bulk crystalline systems and small-molecule dimers.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission from Organic Phosphorescence Emitters

Guo Zu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel pure organic phosphorescence gain molecule (SBP) was reported for optical amplification by stimulated emission from triplet states. The introduction of the benzophenone carbonyl group and sulfur atoms increased the spin orbit coupling constant, accelerating the intersystem crossing and phosphorescence processes. Doping SBP molecules into a PMMA matrix stabilized triplet excitons, resulting in a maximum phosphorescence quantum yield of 18.9%.

Nonradiative Triplet Loss Suppressed in Organic Photovoltaic Blends with Fluoridated Nonfullerene Acceptors

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: The research shows that using fluorinated nonfullerene acceptors in organic photovoltaic blends can suppress the bimolecular recombination of spin-uncorrelated electrons and holes, prolonging the lifetime of charge carriers. This fluorination effect can be explained by modifying the energy alignment between the charge-transfer and locally excited triplet excited states.

High-Lying 31Ag Dark-State-Mediated Singlet Fission

Long Wang et al.

Summary: A new photophysical model involving a high-lying 3(1)A(g) dark-state-mediated ultrafast singlet fission (SF) process in the benzodipyrrolidone (BDPP) skeleton was addressed in this study. The distinctive double excitation character of the 3(1)A(g) dark state, described as the multiexciton (ME) state, allows it to be populated from the initial bright state on an ultrafast time scale. With suitable optical band gap and triplet energy, high triplet yield, and excellent photostability, BDPP emerges as a promising SF candidate for photovoltaic devices, enriching the arsenal of SF materials and contributing new insights into the understanding of dark-state-related photophysics.

Unconventional singlet fission materials

Tobias Ullrich et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is a photophysical downconversion pathway that transforms a singlet excitation into two triplet excited states, offering potential applications in solar energy conversion devices and other areas. While the mechanistic understanding of SF has evolved rapidly, the limited number of suitable SF-chromophores poses a challenge, necessitating the search for new SF materials.
