Porosimetry of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy

J. Mor et al.

Summary: Due to its crystalline morphology, Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) have well designed pore architecture, high surface area, pore volume, and well defined pore network, making them great candidates for gas separation, gas storage, catalysis, and sensors. However, traditional gas adsorption techniques are insufficient for studying the complete pore architecture of ZIFs. Recently, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been identified as a powerful technique for investigating the pore architecture of various ZIFs.

Flexibility of Mixed Ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF-7-8) under CO2 Pressure: An Investigation Using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy

Jaideep Mor et al.

Summary: Fine tuning the pore architecture and flexibility of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) is crucial for their applications in gas separation. This study investigates the tuning of pore architecture and flexibility of ZIF-7-8 frameworks with different benzimidazole (bIm) contents using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements under CO2 pressure. The results show that the frameworks' aperture and cavity open up with increasing bIm content but decrease at higher content. Flexibility, measured using PALS under CO2 pressure, initially decreases and then increases. The study reveals that frameworks with larger apertures are less flexible due to the open configurations of ligands in the lattice, while frameworks with smaller apertures exhibit higher flexibility due to ligand twisting under CO2 pressure. The pore-opening phenomenon induced by lattice flexibility under CO2 pressure is reversible for ZIF-7-8.

ZIF-8 Metal-Organic Framework Electrochemical Biosensor for the Detection of Protein-Protein Interaction

Luciana D. Trino et al.

Summary: A new label-free electrochemical biosensor based on Zeolitic Imidazole Framework (ZIF-8) was developed for monitoring protein-protein interactions (PPIs). The ZIF-8 crystals exhibited a rhombic dodecahedral structure with mainly exposed facets and a mean particle size of 205 (+/- 22) nm. The biosensor demonstrated higher sensitivity and reproducibility compared to the conventional solid-phase binding assay.

Summary: Thin films of crystalline and porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential in various applications, but characterizing their pore size, volume, and surface area can be challenging. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is introduced as a powerful method to obtain pore size information in MOF films, complementing existing physisorption-based techniques.

Two Distinct Stages of Structural Modification of ZIF-L MOF under Electron-Beam Irradiation

Supriya Ghosh et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks experience two stages of structural modification under electron-beam irradiation, involving collapse of the original porous framework and loss of crystallinity, followed by breakdown of linker molecular structure. This degradation significantly affects the dielectric function and energy transitions of the material.

Mengde Li et al.

Summary: In this study, three types of zeolite imidazole frameworks were synthesized and analyzed for their pore structures and CO2 adsorption capacities. The results indicate that at atmospheric pressure, CO2 is effectively captured by micropores, while at extremely low pressures, CO2 is mainly enriched around ultramicropores.
