Essential Oils of Piper pendulispicum C. DC. and Piper hymenophyllum Miq.: Chemical Composition and Anti-microbial activity

Do Ngoc Dai et al.

Summary: Chemical compositions of essential oils from two Vietnamese Piper plants, Piper pendulispicum C. DC. and P. hymenophyllum Miq., were identified through hydro-distillation and GC-FID/MS analysis. The essential oils of P. pendulispicum leaf and stem were mainly composed of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, with bicyclogermacrene and beta-caryophyllene as the principal compounds. P. hymenophyllum leaf oil was mainly composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons, with alpha-pinene and beta-pinene as the principal compounds. These essential oils exhibited better antimicrobial activity than the positive control streptomycin against three Gram-positive bacteria and comparable activity to cycloheximide against Candida albicans. Overall, the essential oil of P. pendulispicum showed greater potential for antimicrobial treatment than P. hymenophyllum leaf oil.

Chemical Profile and Biological Activities of Fungal Strains Isolated from Piper nigrum Roots: Experimental and Computational Approaches

Nguyen Dinh Luyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical properties and biological activities of extracts from three fungal strains isolated from the roots of Piper nigrum L. in Vietnam. The extracts showed cytotoxicity against HepG2 cancer cells, inhibited microbial organisms, and exhibited anti-inflammatory and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Molecular docking analysis revealed the selective binding of certain fatty acids to target enzymes. The findings highlight the potential of these fungal extracts for further development as therapeutic agents.

Chemical Composition, Mosquito Larvicidal and Antimicrobial Activities, and Molecular Docking Study of Essential Oils of Cinnamomum melastomaceum, Neolitsea buisanensis and Uvaria microcarpa from Vietnam

Ty Viet Pham et al.

Summary: The leaf oil compositions of two Lauraceae and one Annonaceae plants cultivated in Vietnam were analyzed. The Lauraceae plants contained benzyl benzoate, linalool, (E)-caryophyllene, and α-terpineol as major compounds, while the Annonaceae plant contained (E)-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene, and δ-elemene as principal compounds. The Lauraceae oil samples exhibited strong mosquito larvicidal activity, and the Annonaceae oil sample showed strong antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger.

Essential oil of Syzygium boisianum (Gagnep.) Merr. & LMPerry: Chemical compositions, antimicrobial activity, and molecular docking

Le Thi Huong et al.

Summary: The essential oil extracted from the Vietnamese Syzygium boisanum leaves was analyzed using GC/FID-MS. Forty-five compounds were identified, with sesquiterpene hydrocarbons being the major chemical class. The antimicrobial assay showed that the essential oil exhibited similar activity to streptomycin against three Gram-positive bacteria. Docking studies suggested that the major compounds in the essential oil could potentially inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase B.

Chemical Composition, Antiaging Activities and Molecular Docking Studies of Essential Oils from Acca sellowiana (Feijoa)

Heba A. S. El-Nashar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition of essential oils from feijoa leaves and stems and their potential as natural anti-aging agents. The oils showed inhibitory effects against different enzymes and exhibited valuable binding interactions. Caryophyllene oxide and alpha-zingiberene showed promising interactions with acetylcholinesterase, while linalool, tau-cadinol, and spathulenol had strong binding energy to collagenase and elastase. This study provides scientific evidence for the use of feijoa essential oils in anti-aging formulations and as an adjuvant for Alzheimer's disease prophylaxis.

Compositions and Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oils from the Leaves of Beilschmiedia fordii Dunn. and Lindera glauca (Siebold & Zucc.) Blume from Vietnam

Dao Thi Minh Chau et al.

Summary: Beilschmiedia fordii and Lindera glauca, plants from the Lauraceae family, have been traditionally used in ethnomedicine to treat diseases, particularly microbial infections. This study investigated the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils from the leaves of B. fordii and L. glauca. The essential oil from B. fordii exhibited promising antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, as well as anti-candidal action against Candida albicans. This is the first report on the chemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of essential oils from B. fordii worldwide, as well as the first report on the antimicrobial activity of L. glauca leaf essential oil.
