Medicinal plants consumption against urinary tract infections: a narrative review of the current evidence

Efthymios Poulios et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common diseases caused by different strains of microorganisms. Many antibiotics have been used to treat these infections, but the development of multidrug-resistant strains poses a major challenge. Medicinal plants are being explored as alternative complementary agents to prevent and treat UTIs, with current evidence showing potential benefits against UTIs through various mechanisms such as preventing bacterial adherence and inhibiting inflammation cascades. However, more well-designed clinical trials focusing on individual medicinal plants are needed to fully understand their effectiveness in preventing and co-treating UTIs.

Photoprotective Effects of a Hyperoside-Enriched Fraction Prepared from Houttuynia cordata Thunb. on Ultraviolet B-Induced Skin Aging in Human Fibroblasts through the MAPK Signaling Pathway

Sariya Mapoung et al.

Summary: The study found that the hyperoside-enriched fraction from Houttuynia cordata has significant photoprotective effects against UVB-induced skin aging by inhibiting intracellular ROS production, inflammatory cytokine secretions, and promoting collagen synthesis. The active compounds identified in the H. cordata extract play a key role in regulating the MAPK signaling pathway to prevent UVB-induced skin aging. These findings suggest that H. cordata extract could be a potential ingredient in pharmaceutical or cosmetic formulations to combat skin aging.

Antimicrobial Potential of Naturally Occurring Bioactive Secondary Metabolites

Khaled S. Allemailem

Summary: The global use of traditional medicines of natural origin has been prevalent since ancient times due to the great diversity of secondary metabolites produced by plants. The naturally occurring bioactive constituents in food and other plant materials have shown widespread attention for their use as alternative medicine to prevent and cure microbial growth, with the least toxic manifestations. These contents play a crucial role in improving the therapeutic efficacy of classical drugs against various pathogenic microorganisms.
