Electroreduction of CO2 on bismuth nanoparticles in seawater

Aaron Mason et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate using seawater as an alternative electrolyte. Bismuth nanoparticles were prepared using a non-toxic method and optimized for better electrocatalytic activity. The electrolysis in seawater showed similar or improved results compared to the traditional bicarbonate buffer, demonstrating seawater's potential as an abundant and affordable alternative electrolyte.

CO2 electrolysis toward acetate: A review

Haoyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Storing renewable electricity from intermittent energy sources by converting waste CO2 into versatile chemicals is a promising solution for a sustainable energy economy. However, the production of multi-carbon products, particularly acetate, faces challenges due to the high energy barrier and low selectivity in C-C coupling. This article summarizes the two major routes for CO2-to-acetate conversion: direct route via CO2 electroreduction reactions (CO2RR) and indirect route via CO reduction reaction (CORR). The mechanisms and catalysts for acetate production through these routes are discussed, along with the correlation between theoretical calculations and experimental results. The challenges and opportunities in current established processes are also addressed, aiming to provide practical design guidelines for industrial CO2-to-acetate production.

Tetracycline removal from aqueous solution by electrooxidation using ruthenium-coated graphite anode

Ibrahim Yasin Koktas et al.

Summary: This paper presents the electrochemical oxidation treatment of an acidic aqueous solution containing a drug tetracycline using a lab-scale electrochemical cell. The performance of tetracycline removal with Ru-coated graphite and raw graphite anodes has been compared. The results show that Ru-coated graphite exhibits higher oxidation power and provides better tetracycline degradation.

Assessment of automated off-line solid-phase extraction LC-MS/MS to monitor EPA priority endocrine disruptors in tap water, surface water, and wastewater

Ken Goeury et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the suitability of automated off-line solid phase extraction liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of EPA-priority endocrine-disrupting compounds in environmental water matrixes. Factors that may influence the analytical performance were assessed, and various materials and protocol variations were tested. The method showed acceptable extraction efficiencies and reliable limits of detection for the target compounds in different water samples. Method validation confirmed the accuracy and precision of the method through linearity, accuracy, and precision tests in reagent water and matrix-matched extracted calibrants.

Electrocatalytic performance of oxygen-activated carbon fibre felt anodes mediating degradation mechanism of acetaminophen in aqueous environments

Pawel Jakobczyk et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the application of carbon felts in electrocatalytic processes and investigates the efficiency improvement of carbon felt anodes through various oxidative modification techniques. The degradation mechanism of acetaminophen on the treated carbon felt anodes is proposed based on the analysis of intermediate compounds. The findings could be applied to process other hazardous pollutants.

Removal of organic pollutants from wastewater by advanced oxidation processes and its combination with membrane processes

Fatima Ezzahra Titchou et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment is a crucial global issue, with organic pollutants posing risks to the environment, leading to the widespread use of membrane filtration, AOPs, and their combinations. Technologies such as photocatalytic ozonation, photoperoxonation, and ultrasound associated processes have shown high efficiency in removing organic pollutants, with the potential for significant cost savings. AOPs/membranes coupled processes are effective in enhancing treatment efficiency and reducing overall costs, offering advantages such as improved water quality, energy savings, and environmental friendliness.

Investigation of the Role of Stimulation and Blockade of 5-HT7 Receptors in Ketamine Anesthesia.

Busra Dincer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the possible role of the 5-HTR7 receptor in ketamine anesthesia by using a 5-HTR7 agonist and/or antagonist. Results showed that the administration of both the 5-HTR7 agonist and antagonist intensified the anesthetic effect of ketamine, suggesting that 5-HTR7 may play a role in ketamine anesthesia through NMDAR.

The graceful art, significant function and wide application behavior of ultrasound research and understanding in carbamazepine (CBZ) enhanced removal and degradation by Fe0/PDS/US

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The advanced oxidation technology of using ultrasound enhanced zero-valent iron/potassium persulfate can effectively remove carbamazepine antibiotic organic contamination wastewater, with ultrasound playing a key role in improving the efficiency of the reaction and expanding the pH range for CBZ degradation. The mechanism involves the generation of active radicals such as SO4·−, (OH)·, and O2(·−) which contribute to the removal of CBZ, with SO4·− playing a prominent role. The degradation process is promoted by the dissolution of iron powder, production of Fe2+ ions, and activation of S2O82- to produce sufficient SO4·− radicals, leading to the efficient degradation of CBZ.

Recent Trends in Pharmaceuticals Removal from Water Using Electrochemical Oxidation Processes

Georgios Bampos et al.

Summary: The research on the environmental applications of electrochemistry for removing pollutants, especially pharmaceuticals, from water has significantly increased in recent years. Efficiency depends on various operating parameters and combining electrochemical oxidation with other methods can be particularly effective. Strategies like using three-dimensional electrodes or electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide have been proposed to improve the drawbacks of electrochemical oxidation. Future researchers are advised to consider the characteristics of different drugs and the limitations of each method when designing experiments.
