Chromium stable isotope distributions in the southwest Pacific Ocean and constraints on hydrothermal input from the Kermadec Arc

David J. Janssen et al.

Summary: Research has focused on the cycling of chromium in the ocean, specifically the influence of deep waters and sediment on the distribution of chromium. The study also examines the potential impact of hydrothermal vents on chromium cycling. The findings suggest that changes in other factors, such as widespread anoxia, may contribute to variations in chromium isotope composition in the paleorecord.

Early Prosperity of Iron Bacteria at the End of the Paleoproterozoic Era

Yifan Qiu et al.

Summary: This study reports the deposition of iron formation at Yunmengshan, located at the southern margin of the North China Craton, around 1.7 billion years ago. It reveals an increase in atmospheric oxygen level at the end of the Paleoproterozoic era, resulting in enhanced continental oxidative weathering and the early prosperity of microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidation bacteria on Earth's terrestrial surface.

Impact of estuaries on fluvial Cr input into the ocean: Perspectives from the Mobile Bay Estuary, Northern Gulf of Mexico

Debbrota Mallick et al.

Summary: The chromium stable isotope system is a promising tool for studying Earth's oxygenation history, but its quantitative application is hindered by an incomplete understanding of the global marine Cr isotope mass balance. This study provides redox-dependent stable Cr isotope data for an oxic estuary, revealing complete reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and significant removal of fluvial Cr(III) in the mixing zone. Estuary loss of Cr and annual variation contribute to an order of magnitude uncertainty in the global fluvial Cr flux estimated previously.

Continental configuration controls ocean oxygenation during the Phanerozoic

Alexandre Pohl et al.

Summary: The early evolution and extinction of marine animals are influenced by changes in dissolved oxygen concentrations in the ocean, which are mainly affected by the geological history of atmospheric oxygen. However, through Earth system model experiments, it is discovered that continental rearrangement during the Phanerozoic era has led to variations in ocean oxygen levels and a decoupling in time between the upper-ocean and benthic [O-2].

Light Zn and Cu isotope compositions recorded in ferromanganese crusts during the Cenozoic as evidence for hydrothermal inputs in South Pacific deep seawater

Bleuenn Gueguen et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution record of Cu and Zn isotopes in four Fe-Mn crusts from the North and South Pacific oceans. The results suggest that Cu and Zn in these crusts are mainly derived from seawater precipitation and can reflect the metal isotope composition of deep seawater. Cu and Zn isotopes show different patterns between the North and South Pacific Oceans but exhibit similar temporal evolution within each geographical area.

Chromium Cycling in Redox-Stratified Basins Challenges δ53Cr Paleoredox Proxy Applications

David J. Janssen et al.

Summary: Chromium stable isotope composition (delta Cr-53) is a useful tracer for redox conditions, but recent research indicates that the isotope fractionation in modern redox-stratified basins challenges previous assumptions in paleoredox studies. The data from Lake Cadagno in Switzerland demonstrate non-quantitative reduction and removal of chromium, resulting in isotopically light chromium accumulation in deep waters and discrepancies between sedimentary records and overlying waters.

Marine microbial Mn(II) oxidation mediates Cr(III) oxidation and isotope fractionation

Marzia Miletto et al.

Summary: Stable chromium isotopes have been used as a paleoredox proxy to track atmospheric oxygenation, with previous belief that Cr oxidation is limited to terrestrial settings. However, recent research shows rapid marine Cr(III) oxidation linked to microbial Mn(II) oxidation, challenging the traditional view. Initial partial oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) can cause a small isotope fractionation, calling for a reevaluation of the link between Cr isotope values and atmospheric oxygenation.

Release from biogenic particles, benthic fluxes, and deep water circulation control Cr and δ53Cr distributions in the ocean interior

David J. Janssen et al.

Summary: Chromium in the ocean is controlled by redox processes, with removal and release mechanisms differing between surface and deep waters. Global Cr distributions are influenced by a combination of circulation patterns, biogenic processes, and water mass mixing. More research is needed on how sedimentary Cr records reflect these processes.

Upper limits on the extent of seafloor anoxia during the PETM from uranium isotopes

Matthew O. Clarkson et al.

Summary: The Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a major carbon cycle and climate disruption that was associated with ocean de-oxygenation, with a limited expansion of seafloor anoxia on a global scale as indicated by carbonate associated uranium isotope data and biogeochemical modeling. The new U isotope data suggest a maximum 10-fold expansion of anoxia, covering less than 2% of seafloor area, consistent with plausible carbon emission scenarios and observations of carbon cycle recovery.

Trivalent chromium isotopes in the eastern tropical North Pacific oxygen-deficient zone

Tianyi Huang et al.

Summary: Research findings in the eastern tropical North Pacific (ETNP) oxygen-deficient zone (ODZ) support theoretical and experimental studies predicting that lighter chromium is preferentially reduced in low-oxygen environments and residual dissolved chromium becomes heavier due to removal of particl-reactive Cr(III) on sinking particles. Microbial activity, dependent on sinking organic matter flux, may be the dominant mechanism for chromium transformation, rather than a simple inorganic chemical conversion.

The chromium isotope fractionation factor in seawater

Xiangli Wang

Summary: The stable chromium (Cr) isotope system is increasingly being used as a redox proxy for studying the oxygenation history of Earth's ocean-atmosphere system, but understanding of Cr isotope fractionation in modern seawater is still limited. There is a linear relationship between the isotope composition and the logarithmic concentration of total dissolved Cr in the global ocean, but a significant proportion of data deviates from this global trend. Experimental results suggest that this deviation may be explained by parallel removal pathways with varying 'intrinsic' Cr isotope fractionation factors.

Modeling the marine chromium cycle: new constraints on global-scale processes

Frerk Poppelmeier et al.

Summary: This study focused on the distribution and cycling mechanisms of chromium in the ocean, introducing two oxidation states for a more detailed understanding. The model established was able to simulate observations well, identifying potentially lower benthic chromium flux in the Arctic region. Further research is needed to better understand these critical areas for chromium cycling.
