Summary: This study investigated the interactions among Cu(II), biogenic materials, and Fe2O3 in a controlled environment. The effects of Fe2O3 and bacterial biofilms on Cu(II) distribution in a simulated aquatic environment were studied. A biofilm reactor was used to understand the metal speciation of Cu(II) and its distribution. Pseudomonas atlantica was cultured to adsorb Cu(II) and it was found that biofilms significantly enhanced Cu(II) adsorption. Cu(II) inhibited bacterial growth, but the presence of glycine and EDTA reduced its toxicity.

Chromium Removal from Aqueous Solution Using Natural Clinoptilolite

Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of natural zeolite clinoptilolite as a low-cost adsorbent for removing chromium from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent is pretreated with NaCl to enhance its removal performance and is regenerated with NaOH to sustain cost-effectiveness. Results show that NaCl-treated clinoptilolite has a higher Cr adsorption capacity and can treat a larger bed volume at a longer breakthrough time compared to as-received clinoptilolite. However, the treated effluents still do not meet the required Cr limit set by the EPA.

Fatima Batool et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of a chitosan-coated coconut-shell carbon composite for landfill leachate treatment. The composite showed significantly better removal of both COD and NH3-N compared to other materials tested. The breakthrough curve exhibited an ideal S shape, and a low flow rate and deeper bed depth were found to be necessary for optimal column operations. The composite achieved 96% regeneration in the first cycle. However, the treated effluents still did not meet the required effluent limits. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that low-cost composites derived from unused resources can be effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment.
