Finite volume simulations of particle-laden viscoelastic fluid flows: application to hydraulic fracture processes

C. Fernandes et al.

Summary: Accurately resolving the coupled momentum transfer between the liquid and solid phases of complex fluids is essential in multiphase transport processes. This study uses direct numerical simulations and closure drag laws to investigate the flow characteristics of viscoelastic fluids through static random arrays of spherical particles.

The dynamics of settling particles in vertical channel flows: gravity, lift and particle clusters

Amir Esteghamatian et al.

Summary: This study examines the settling dynamics of finite-size particles in vertical channel flows of Newtonian and viscoelastic carrier fluids using particle-resolved simulations. Qualitative changes in particle distribution are observed due to the relative velocity between the particle and fluid phases, with dense particles homogeneously distributed in the channel core and a peak concentration profile near the wall. The significance of Magnus lift force, shear- and rotation-induced lift forces, and clustering of particles near the wall are highlighted, impacting the particle distribution and drag.

Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats

Maarten R. Dobbelaere et al.

Summary: Machine learning has significant advantages in the field of chemical engineering, including flexibility, accuracy, and execution speed, but also comes with weaknesses such as lack of interpretability. The biggest opportunities lie in using machine learning for real-time optimization and planning, while the greatest threat is inappropriate use.
