Combined silicon carbide and zirconia open cell foams for the process intensification of catalytic methane combustion in lean conditions: Impact on heat and mass transfer

Carmen W. Moncada Quintero et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of silicon carbide and zirconia open cell foams coated with PdO/Co3O4 catalyst were tested for methane oxidation, with the best results achieved when the two supports were used in series with different thermal conductivities. Mass transfer effects, external and internal heat transfer effects were evaluated, and comparisons were made in terms of volumetric heat transfer coefficient and heats of removal/reaction.

The Effect of Catalyst Placement on the Stability of a U-Bend Catalytic Heat-Recirculating Micro-Combustor: A Numerical Investigation

Niket S. Kaisare et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effect of catalyst placement and solid thermal conductivity on the stability of a U-bend catalytic heat-recirculating micro-combustor. The results showed that at low thermal conductivity, the configuration with only the inner wall coated with catalyst exhibited the same resistance to extinction as the configuration with both inner and outer walls coated, while at high thermal conductivity, the configuration with both walls coated had higher stability against blowout.

Heat Transport in Open-Cell Foams: CFD Analysis of Artificial Heat Sources vs Fully Resolved Exothermal Reactions

Christoph Sinn et al.

Summary: Catalytic structured foam reactors have promising characteristics for process intensification, such as low pressure drop, high specific surface area, and remarkable heat transport. Understanding heat transport is crucial for the design of small-scale dynamically operated reactors. Computational fluid dynamics plays a key role in investigating the thermal field of the coupled gas/solid under reaction conditions in structured reactors.

The Effect of Differentiating the Thermal Conductivity between Inner and Outer Walls on the Stability of a U-Bend Catalytic Heat-Recirculating Micro-Combustor: A CFD Study

Valeria Di Sarli

Summary: The study found that differentiating the thermal conductivity between inner and outer walls of a U-bend catalytic heat-recirculating micro-combustor can enlarge the stable operating window, with the inner wall mainly affecting extinction and the outer wall mainly controlling blowout.
