Facile synthesis of metal-organic frameworks embedded in interconnected macroporous polymer as a dual acid-base bifunctional catalyst for efficient conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Yanan Wei et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the synthesis of a dual acid-base bifunctional macroporous polymer catalyst through a one-pot process using Pickering high internal phase emulsions as templates and metal-organic frameworks as co-stabilizers. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity in converting cellulose to 5-HMF, with the connected large pore size and the synergistic effect of acid and base active sites playing significant roles in improving the yield.

Directional synthesis of furfural compounds from holocellulose catalyzed by sulfamic acid

Yuchan Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coproduction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and furfural (FUR) through the direct hydrolysis of holocellulose analogue composed of cellulose and hemicellulose, using sulfamic acid with dual active sites as catalyst. The study found that by controlling the catalyst amount, solvent type and amount, reaction temperature, and time, high yields of 5-HMF and FUR can be obtained. The proposed mechanism suggests a synergistic effect between the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose during the conversion of holocellulose.
