Coarse-grained CFD-DEM simulation of coal and biomass co-gasification process in a fluidized bed reactor: Effects of particle size distribution and operating pressure

Shaohua Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the co-gasification process of coal and biomass in a bubbling fluidized bed gasifier using a coarse-grained computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) simulation. The effects of particle size distribution and operating pressure on hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and co-gasification performance are analyzed. The results show that the increase in sand particle size distribution (PSD) width has a slight impact on particle concentration distribution, particle residence time distribution, and co-gasification performance. The convective heat transfer rate is significantly higher than that of conduction and radiation. An increase in PSD width leads to the formation of a vertical solid temperature gradient at the bottom of the bed due to deteriorated solid mixing. Higher operating pressure results in a decrease in bed temperature, and the variation in convective heat transfer rate dominates the heat transfer efficiency. Elevated operating pressure promotes the thermal-chemical conversion of blend fuel by accelerating the char conversion reaction.

A detailed gas-solid fluidized bed comparison study on CFD-DEM coarse-graining techniques

M. J. A. de Munck et al.

Summary: Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) is a numerical tool used for detailed fluidized bed studies. To overcome its computational expense, coarse-graining techniques have been developed. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of different coarse-graining scaling laws in characterizing the original system. We also demonstrated the usefulness of a continuous two-way smoothing function in achieving grid-independent solutions in CFD-DEM simulations.

A coarse-grained parcel method for heat and mass transfer simulations of spray coating processes

Stefan Madlmeir et al.

Summary: The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is commonly used for modeling the flow of particulate materials. To reduce computational demand, parcels are introduced by coarse graining, which requires sophisticated models to preserve the original behavior. This study extends the coarse-graining concepts by introducing models for particle-fluid mass transfer and spray deposition rate, enabling precise particle-droplet-air interaction modeling at low computational cost for spray coating processes.

Coarse-Grain DEM Modelling in Fluidized Bed Simulation: A Review

Alberto Di Renzo et al.

Summary: In the past decade, the application of CFD-DEM for fluidized beds has expanded from small, lab-scale units to larger scale systems, benefiting greatly from coarse graining methods. By introducing coarse graining procedures based on different physical backgrounds, the number of particles that can be simulated has increased, covering pilot-scale and industrially relevant systems. The review discusses scaling for contact forces, hydrodynamic forces, and cohesive forces, quantifying computational savings in terms of coarse graining degree and presenting recent applications and future directions in the field.
