Particle oscillation at corrugated membrane-water interface: An in-situ direct observation and implication to membrane fouling control

Meiyue Yang et al.

Summary: Membrane surface patterning is a promising technique for fouling control, but its underlying mechanism is not well understood. In this study, an in-situ real-time observation system was constructed to investigate the transport and deposition behaviors of particle tracers on a corrugated membrane surface. It was observed that particles traveled wavily along the membrane surface pattern and exhibited different behaviors in the pattern valleys at different velocities. Numerical simulations suggested that local turbulence and boundary layer separation were the major mechanisms underlying the observed particle behaviors. These findings provide insights into the dynamics of particle transportation in patterned membrane filtration.

Superior separation of industrial oil-in-water emulsions utilizing surface patterned isotropic PES membranes

Ahmed A. R. Abdel-Aty et al.

Summary: Developing polymeric membranes with topographic patterns has become a popular approach for treating oily wastewater. Using phase separation micro-molding processes, isotropic polyethersulfone (PES) membranes with line patterns and porous structure were prepared. These patterned membranes showed superior hydrophilicity and antifouling capabilities compared to flat PES membranes. They also exhibited high water permeance and separation efficiency for oil-in-water emulsions, making them effective for treating high concentration and industrial oils.

Patterned membranes for improving hydrodynamic properties and mitigating membrane fouling in water treatment: A review

Qiao Wang et al.

Summary: Membrane technologies have been widely used in water treatment, but membrane fouling is still a problem. Patterned membranes, with diversified topographies, show superior antifouling performances due to hydrodynamic effects and interaction effects. However, further research is needed to develop patterned membranes for different water treatment scenarios, understand the influence of surface patterns on interaction forces, and verify the anti-fouling performances in practical applications.

3D printed nanofiltration composite membranes with reduced concentration polarisation

Saeed Mazinani et al.

Summary: This study presents the first use of 3D printed nanofiltration composite membranes with surface patterns to minimize the impact of concentration polarisation. The results demonstrate that the use of wavy patterns on the composite membranes significantly reduces concentration polarisation and improves hydrodynamics, leading to higher permeance and molecular weight cut-off.

Effect of surface-patterned topographies of ceramic membranes on the filtration of activated sludge and their interaction with different particle sizes

Zhiyang Lyu et al.

Summary: Surface patterning on filtration membranes provides benefits of increasing effective filtration area and enhancing back diffusion of foulants. This study investigates the relationship between pattern sizes and foulant particle sizes, and finds that the performance of ceramic membranes with different topographies varies in fouling alleviation. The best design for fouling alleviation is a combination of h = 120 μm and s = 500 μm.
