Chitosan-based composite films to remove cationic and anionic dyes simultaneously from aqueous solutions: Modeling and optimization using RSM

Mohammad Saeid Rostami et al.

Summary: Regarding the existence of cationic and anionic dyes in water, it is crucial to develop new techniques for their simultaneous removal. In this study, a chitosan/poly-2-aminothiazole composite film reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotube-Mg Al-layered double hydroxide (CPML) was created and used as an effective adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes removal. The synthesized CPML was characterized using SEM, TGA, FTIR, XRD, and BET methods. The highest adsorption capacities were found to be 471.12 and 230.87 mg g-1 for MB and MO, respectively. Different isotherm and kinetic models showed that the adsorption of dyes onto CPML nanocomposite (NC) followed the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating monolayer adsorption on the homogeneous surface of NCs. The reusability experiment demonstrated that the CPML NC could be used multiple times. Experimental results suggest that the CPML NC has significant potential for treating cationic and anionic dye-contaminated water.

New insights into membrane fouling during direct membrane filtration of municipal wastewater and fouling control with mechanical strategies

Yu Men et al.

Summary: Direct membrane filtration (DMF) technology achieves energy self-sufficiency by recovering and utilizing carbon from municipal wastewater. Targeted research on fouling behavior and mechanisms is essential to control severe membrane fouling and improve DMF technology. A DMF reactor equipped with a flat-sheet ceramic membrane was used in this study to investigate fouling under different scenarios. The results showed that membrane fouling was dominated by intermediate blocking and cake filtration, and reversible external resistance accounted for a large portion of the total resistance. The predominant membrane foulants were free proteins, which led to the deposition of cells and biopolymers.

Convert waste to MOF: Nitro-MIL-53(Al) synthesized from waste acid leachate for highly efficient capture of p-nitrophenol

Ke Feng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a feasible method to design and synthesize Al-based MOF material for capturing p-nitrophenol from the Al-rich acid leachate of natural kaolinite. By directly reacting the acid leachate neutralized with aluminum compound with nitroterephthalic acid, Al-MOF (Nitro-MIL-53(Al)) is formed, achieving the simultaneous harmless disposal of acidic wastewater, recovery of valuable metal, and synthesis of new materials. The porous Nitro-MIL-53(Al) adsorbent exhibits excellent adsorption capacity (173.01 mg/g) and removal efficiency (95.76%, at 400 mg/L) for PNP, and can be regenerated and reused multiple times. Furthermore, it maintains a high adsorption capability (117.76-153.21 mg/g) for PNP in waters containing different amounts of co-existing ions. The adsorption of PNP onto Nitro-MIL-53(Al) occurs through a chemisorption process, involving π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic attraction.
