Development of over 3000 cycles durable macro-encapsulated aluminum with cavity by a sacrificial layer method for high temperature latent heat storage

Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: This work presents a facile and novel sacrificial layer method to create macro-encapsulating aluminum (Al) phase change materials (PCMs) by coating them with an alumina (Al2O3) shell characterized by a 'buffer' inner cavity. The macrocapsules showed high heat storage density and long-term thermal cycling stability, demonstrating their potential application in high-temperature thermal energy storage (TES) systems.

Microencapsulation of Al-Zn alloy as phase change materials for high-temperature thermal storage application

Qinglin Li et al.

Summary: A novel phase change material composed of Al-Zn alloy microencapsulated was proposed in this study. The three-step process to form microencapsulated PCMs (MEPCMs) involves boehmite treatment, thermal oxidation treatment, and copper plating treatment, resulting in a composite shell with dense and durable Al2O3, ZnO, and Cu. The MEPCMs exhibit high heat storage capacity, thermal stability, and cycling performance, making them suitable for applications in industrial waste heat recovery, building energy conservation, and aerospace.

Al-Ni alloy-based core-shell type microencapsulated phase change material for high temperature thermal energy utilization

Yuto Shimizu et al.

Summary: In this study, an MEPCM using Al-5 wt.%Ni alloy was developed, which exhibited high latent heat capacity with a higher melting and solidification point. The developed MEPCM maintained its original shape and high latent heat capacity, even after multiple cycles of melting and solidification. Al-Ni alloy-based MEPCM is expected to be applied in the next-generation high-temperature latent heat thermal energy storage systems.
