Alternatives to water oxidation in the photocatalytic water splitting reaction for solar hydrogen production

Yaqiang Wu et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic water splitting process is promising for sustainable H-2 production, but current devices lack efficiency and result in high H-2 cost. The economic viability can be achieved by producing more valuable products or integrating with reforming processes of real waste streams. Research has explored alternative photo-oxidation reactions to replace water oxidation and achieve chemical valorization with concurrent H-2 production. These technologies contribute to providing H-2 energy and producing high-value chemicals for a sustainable chemical industry.
