Varied promotion effects and mechanisms of biochar on anaerobic digestion (AD) under distinct food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratios and biochar dosages

Yuqi Chen et al.

Summary: Biochar promotes anaerobic digestion through various mechanisms, including enriching microbes, buffering pH, and promoting electron transfer. This study investigated the effects of different biochar dosages and food to microorganism (F/M) ratios on organic transformations, bioelectrochemical characteristics, and microbial consortia. Results showed that the electron transfer system (ETS) was proportional to biochar dosage, and biochar mainly accelerated methane production by promoting ETS at F/M ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. Under a higher F/M ratio of 2.0, biochar shortened the AD duration and facilitated syntrophic methanogenesis via direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). The study also found that biochar promoted both anabolism and catabolism of anaerobes, and enhanced DIET by converting hydrotrophic methanogenesis into acetolastic methanogenesis pathway. However, excessive biochar resulted in increased specific methanation activities (SMAs) and decreased methane yield due to superfluous biomass growth. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for the application of biochar in anaerobic digestion under different F/M ratios and dosages.

Biochar-assisted anaerobic membrane bioreactor towards high-efficient energy recovery from swine wastewater: Performances and the potential mechanisms

Gaojun Wang et al.

Summary: A high-efficient energy recovery system of biochar-assisted anaerobic membrane bioreactor (BC-AnMBR) was established for swine wastewater treatment. Biochar addition accelerated VFA degradation during start-up stage and shortened start-up duration by 44.0%. Under a high OLR, BC-AnMBR promoted COD removal efficiency, methane production rate, and showed changes in microbial community and metabolic pathways. The excellent energy yield performances confirmed BC-AnMBR as an advanced system for high-strength swine wastewater treatment.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for municipal wastewater treatment- potential benefits, constraints, and future perspectives: An updated review

Alia Aslam et al.

Summary: The application of AnMBRs in municipal wastewater treatment is sustainable and beneficial, but challenges such as organic strength, membrane fouling, salinity build-up, inhibitory substances, temperature, and membrane stability need to be addressed for economic and technical viability. Further research is needed to determine the energy utilization and potential in AnMBRs for energy neutrality or positivity, as well as to address concurrent challenges in operation for future perspectives.

Enriched autoinducer-2 (AI-2)-based quorum quenching consortium in a ceramic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for biofouling retardation

Boyan Xu et al.

Summary: This study enriched a facultative QQ consortium for AI-2-based QS disruption and discovered its quorum quenching performance in an AnMBR for membrane fouling retardation. The QQ consortium was able to degrade DPD and prolong membrane filtration operation in treating domestic wastewater. QQ reduced the content of proteins and carbohydrates and altered the composition of EPS and SMP. Moreover, QQ decreased the quantity of organics and planktonic microorganisms in the supernatant and enhanced methane production while reducing sulfate reduction.

In-depth insights into the temporal-based fouling mechanism and its exploration in anaerobic membrane bioreactors: A review

Tongyu Wang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the fouling mechanisms in the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The fouling development can be divided into three stages: pore narrowing, pore-clogging, and gel/cake layer formation. Different foulants play dominant roles at different stages. The interactions between the membrane and foulants are qualitatively discussed in detail.

Role of spent coffee ground biochar in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor for treating synthetic swine wastewater

Chenhao Sun et al.

Summary: Using anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) to treat swine wastewater is an effective method to recover bioenergy. This study found that adding biochar prepared from spent coffee grounds (SCG-BC) to AnMBR can increase methane yield, reduce CO2 production, and decrease membrane fouling.

Role and significance of co-additive of biochar and nano-magnetite on methane production from waste activated sludge: Non-synergistic rather than synergistic effects

Hong-Yu Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of co-additive of biochar (BC) and nano-magnetite (NM) on anaerobic digestion and found that there were no synergistic effects. Methane production decreased by 24.7% and 38.3% in the simultaneous co-additive strategy, while it was slightly higher in the stepwise additive strategies compared to BC alone but lower than NM alone. Mechanism studies suggested that BC adsorbed soluble organics, reducing available substrates for methanogens.
