Wenze Guo et al.

Summary: The synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from glucose over in-situ phosphated titania catalysts is presented. Phosphates were incorporated into the titania framework forming Lewis-Bronsted acid pairs that enhanced the glucose turnover and HMF selectivity. The catalyst showed high HMF yield in a biphasic system and could be regenerated by calcination after deactivation mainly by humin deposition.

Catalytic Hydrogenation/Hydrogenolysis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Dimethylfuran

Paivi Maki-Arvela et al.

Summary: Recent advances in the transformation of biobased 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran, a potential liquid fuel, have been critically summarized. The highest yields were obtained using bimetallic Cu-Co supported on carbon or Ni supported on mesoporous carbon under specific reaction conditions. The ideal catalyst should have high metal dispersion and some acidity to promote both hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis, while minimizing the formation of byproducts.

Structural features of cotton gin trash derived carbon material as a catalyst for the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Athukoralalage Don K. Deshan et al.

Summary: A highly efficient chlorosulfonated carbon catalyst was prepared from cotton gin trash, showing similar performance to a commercial catalyst. The catalyst consists of three aromatic layers with functional groups such as -COOH, phenolic OH, -SO3-, and -SO3H, and can be reused multiple times without loss of activity. The formation of the sugar intermediate during the dehydration process may be related to hydrogen bonding and fructose adsorption onto the carbon regions.

Summary: This study investigates the role of Lewis/Bronsted acid sites in glucose dehydration, finding that catalyst activity is dependent on catalyst composition. Lewis acid promotes isomerization, while Bronsted acid directly dehydrates glucose to HMF. Furthermore, the study includes kinetic modeling of the reactions and their comparison with empirical observations.

Influence of Lewis acidity and CaCl2 on the direct transformation of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

B. Torres-Olea et al.

Summary: Nb-Zr oxides were evaluated for glucose dehydration to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The study showed a linear relationship between the amount of acid sites and niobium content. Nb2O5 demonstrated the highest acid concentration and surface area, with both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites, while Zr-containing catalysts mostly exhibited Lewis acid sites. The combination of CaCl2 and Zr-containing catalysts resulted in direct formation of HMF without fructose, in contrast to Nb2O5 which possesses both types of acid sites. A HMF yield of 44% was achieved with Nb3Zr7 as acid catalyst and CaCl2 after 90 minutes at 175°C, with the catalysts being reusable for at least 3 runs without pretreatment.
