Rapid Biodegradation of the Organophosphorus Insecticide Acephate by a Novel Strain Burkholderia sp. A11 and Its Impact on the Structure of the Indigenous Microbial Community

Xiaozhen Wu et al.

Summary: Burkholderia sp. A11 was found to efficiently degrade acephate, with a degradation efficiency of 83.36% within 56 hours. The A11 strain exhibited broad substrate tolerance and effectively degraded acephate in the concentration range of 10-1600 mg/L. Six metabolites were identified during the degradation process, with methamidophos, acetamide, acetic acid, methanethiol, and dimethyl disulfide being the main products. The degradation pathways involved amide bond breaking and phosphate bond hydrolysis. Furthermore, strain A11 successfully colonized different soils and substantially accelerated acephate degradation, degrading over 90% of acephate (50-200 mg/kg) within 120 hours. 16S rDNA sequencing confirmed that strain A11 gradually became the dominant species in the soil microbial communities, causing slight changes in diversity and composition.

A novel thermostable and salt-tolerant carboxylesterase involved in the initial aerobic degradation pathway for pyrethroids in Glycomyces salinus

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: The long-term and excessive use of pyrethroid pesticides poses substantial health risks and ecosystem concerns. A novel carboxylesterase, EstGS1, was characterized in this study, showing the ability to hydrolyze pyrethroid pesticides. EstGS1 exhibited optimal activity at 60 degrees C and pH 8.5 using pNPC2 as substrate. It is a halotolerant esterase and remains stable in high salt concentrations. This study presents the first report on a pyrethroid pesticide hydrolase characterized from a halophilic actinobacteria.

Mechanism of β-cypermethrin metabolism by Bacillus cereus GW-01

Jiayuan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study isolated a beta-cypermethrin degrading bacterium named GW-01 from a sheep's rumen chyme, which degraded approximately 60% of 100 mg/L beta-CY within 7 days. During the degradation process, strain GW-01 transiently accumulated 3-phenoxybenzoic acid, phenol, and benzoic acid. Transcriptional and proteomic evidence suggested the involvement of chlorohydrolase in the degradation of phenol to catechol, and upregulation of the benzoic acid degradation pathway and meta-pathway during degradation.

Household prallethrin-based insecticide toxicity on different C. elegans life stage: A possible sign of Huntington Disease*

Wagner Antonio Tamagno et al.

Summary: Household insecticides, especially pyrethroids, which are commonly used for insect control, have low toxicity for mammals at low doses. However, our study shows that sublethal doses of a prallethrin-based insecticide have adverse effects on the behavior and physiology of Caenorhabditis elegans, especially during transgenerational and lifespan exposure. These effects are indicated by changes in biomarkers such as decreased acetylcholinesterase activity, retardation of heat shock protein expression, and increased aggregation of PolyQ40, suggesting a potential link to neurodegenerative conditions like Huntington's Disease.

Biotechnological basis of microbial consortia for the removal of pesticides from the environment

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: Microbial strains as axenic cultures have been widely used in various sectors, with natural environment emphasizing the importance of multi-species consortia over monocultures. Cell signaling and communication pathways are crucial in engineering microbial consortia, where communication occurs through diffusible signal molecules. The lack of knowledge regarding interactions among mixed microbial cultures has hindered their exploration, but recent studies have proposed ideas for studying microbial communities for biotechnological applications. Unique metabolic features of microbes in natural environments are divided among strains within microbial consortia, which exhibit robust performance in pesticide degradation. Additionally, synthetic microbial consortia have shown promise in performing functions at naturally contaminated sites. This review focuses on the applications and future directions of microbial consortia, exploring new platforms and future perspectives while emphasizing the practical application of scientific information.
