Identifying the Role of Lewis-base Sites for the Chemistry in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Chuan Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers constructed a metal-organic framework, UIO-66-NH2, containing Lewis base sites, and comprehensively investigated the pivotal mechanism of Lewis base sites in promoting the electrocatalytic reaction processes of lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the Lewis base sites acted as electron donors and enhanced the activation of O-2/Li2O2 during the discharged-charged process, leading to accelerated reaction kinetics of LOBs. Moreover, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra and DFT calculations demonstrated that the Lewis base sites converted the Li2O2 growth mechanism from surface-adsorption growth to solvation-mediated growth by capturing Li+, thus weakening the adsorption energy of UIO-66-NH2 towards LiO2. The LOB based on UIO-66-NH2 showed high discharge specific capacity, low discharged-charged overpotential, and long cycling life.

Effects of support material and electrolyte on a triphenylamine substituted cobalt porphyrin catalytic oxygen reduction reaction

Rui Yuan et al.

Summary: The interfacial charge transfer conditions are crucial for understanding the catalytic mechanism and developing high performing electrocatalysts. To investigate the effects of support material and electrolyte on metalloporphyrin catalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a symmetric triphenylamine (TPA) substituted cobalt porphyrin, s-TPA-CoP, was synthesized, and carbon black and multi-walled carbon nanotubes were selected as the supports to fabricate composite catalysts. The ORR performances were measured in both acidic and alkaline solutions. The results showed that the support material had negligible effects on reduction potentials, but the composite catalyst with stronger 7C-7C stacking in s-TPA-CoP/CNT exhibited greater limiting current densities and larger electron transfer numbers compared to s-TPA-CoP/XC in either electrolyte. Both composites showed better ORR activity but poorer 4-electron selectivity in alkaline solution than in acid, and the origins of these differences were discussed in terms of interfacial charge states and inner-/outer-sphere electron transfer mechanisms. Notably, s-TPA-CoP/CNT demonstrated an electron transfer number of 3.8 in acid, highlighting the advantage of TPA as a substitution on monometallic cobalt porphyrins for achieving 4-electron transfer oxygen reduction.

Amine Groups in the Second Sphere of Iron Porphyrins Allow for Higher and Selective 4e-/4H+Oxygen Reduction Rates at Lower Overpotentials

Sarmistha Bhunia et al.

Summary: Iron porphyrins with one or four tertiary amine groups in their second sphere show higher rates and selectivity in the electrochemical O2 reduction reaction (ORR) compared to iron tetraphenylporphyrin lacking these amines. The presence of these amine groups leads to protonation and lower overpotentials, enhancing the ORR rate. Heterogeneous aqueous conditions reveal changes in the rate-determining step (rds) of the ORR depending on the number of amine groups, with cleavage of the O-O bond being the rds in the presence of one amine group, while proton-coupled reduction becomes the rds with four amine groups.

Meso-substituted Metalloporphyrin-based Composites for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Rui Yuan et al.

Summary: Metalloporphyrins are promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions due to their structure modification and coordinated environment. However, their performance is often poorer than Pt-based materials, motivating research on the relationship between catalyst structure and ORR mechanisms. This review focuses on the design of porphyrin structures, including the selection of metal ions and modulation of functional substituents. The influences of carbon materials as catalyst supports and electrolytes on ORR properties are also discussed.

Xialiang Li et al.

Summary: This Account describes recent investigations on catalytic HER, OER, and ORR with metalloporphyrins and derivatives. The authors focus on exploring metalloporphyrins to study reaction mechanisms and structure-function relationships. They provide insights into H-H and O-O bond formation/cleavage mechanisms in HER, identify Mn-based nucleophilic attack mechanism for O-O bond formation in OER, and propose strategies to enhance activity and selectivity in ORR. The authors also developed strategies to graft metalloporphyrins on various electrode materials for improved electrocatalytic performance. This information is valuable for the development of porphyrin-based catalysts and other molecular and material catalysts for small molecule activation reactions.

Second-Sphere Hydrogen-Bond Donors and Acceptors Affect the Rate and Selectivity of Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction by Iron Porphyrins Differently

Arnab Ghatak et al.

Summary: Controlling the factors that affect the rate and selectivity of 4e-/4H+ O2 reduction is crucial for efficient energy transformation and understanding the final step of respiration in aerobic organisms. This study explores the use of artificial systems with different second-sphere residues to enhance the rate and efficiency of O2 reduction. By investigating the behavior of an iron porphyrin complex with pendant 1,10-phenanthroline residues, the researchers discovered that the pH-dependent variations in the reaction rate are due to different intermediates formed at different pH levels. These findings, along with density functional theory calculations, provide insights into designing an efficient electrochemical O2 reduction reaction based on bioinspirations.

By using a library of protic ionic liquids on platinum and gold interfaces, researchers have successfully enhanced the oxygen reduction reaction activity by up to fivefold, showing a volcano-shaped dependence on the pK(a) of the ionic liquid. This enhancement is attributed to strengthened hydrogen bonds between ORR products and ionic liquids with similar pK(a)s, leading to favorable PCET kinetics.
