Ultra-lightweight hollow bowl-like carbon as microwave absorber owning broad band and low filler loading

Yalei Hao et al.

Summary: In this study, hollow bowl-like carbon (HBC) materials were controllably constructed by the hard template method, and their tunable pore structure, surface properties, and shell thicknesses contribute to excellent performance. The HBC with a shell thickness of 3 nm exhibited the best wave-absorbing performance at a 4% absorber content. Its minimum reflection loss value was -50 dB at a thin thickness of 2.26 mm, and its effective absorption bandwidth, at a fixed thin thickness of 2 mm, could reach as wide as 7.04 GHz (10.96-18 GHz). Thin shells are essential for achieving lightweight and the bowl-like shape prevents the formation of percolative networks. with a low mass fraction of absorber content, the HBC materials can obtain moderate dielectric constant and loss, leading to good impedance matching and sufficient attenuation capacity. This work provides an effective and sustainable approach to utilize porous carbon materials for developing lightweight and high-performance wave-absorbing materials.

All-Organic Redox Targeting with a Single Redox Moiety: Combining Organic Radical Batteries and Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Erik Schroeter et al.

Summary: This study investigates an all-organic Nernstian potential-driven redox targeting system that combines a single-electrode material from organic radical batteries with a single redox couple of an aqueous, organic redox flow battery. The experimental results demonstrate that 78-90% of the theoretical capacity of the electrode material from the organic radical battery can be addressed when it is used as the redox target in the electrolyte tank of an operating aqueous organic redox flow battery.

Effects of conductive additives on the percolation networks and rheological properties of LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 suspensions for lithium slurry battery

Peipei Su et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the effects of conductive additives on the rheological and electrochemical properties of suspension electrodes. The results show that different additives have different percolation thresholds and inflection points. The 1.5 wt.% KB-based suspension exhibits superior cycle and rate performances.

Exclusion of DC conductivity effect from dielectric loss spectrum using Kramers-Kronig relations for evaluation of slow dynamics of water molecules

Hiroaki Matsuura et al.

Summary: In this study, a practical procedure based on the Kramers-Kronig (KK) relations to exclude the contribution of DC conductivity from the experimentally obtained dielectric spectrum was demonstrated. Examples of the KK transform for ultrapure water and aqueous solution of protein (lysozyme) spectra showed the feasibility of this method.

Flexible polystyrene/graphene composites with epsilon-near-zero properties

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the fabrication and characterization of flexible polystyrene/graphene (PS/GR) composites with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties at radio frequency. The addition of graphene nanosheets in PS matrix led to the formation of a continuous conductive network, resulting in the observation of ENZ behavior at around 920 kHz. This research demonstrates the potential of flexible PS/GR composites in applications such as invisibility cloaks, drug delivery, and soft robotics.

Recent advances in radio-frequency negative dielectric metamaterials by designing heterogeneous composites

Peitao Xie et al.

Summary: Dielectric constant is a physical parameter that determines the response of materials to electromagnetic waves or electrical field. Negative dielectric property, a key for constructing metamaterials, has unique electromagnetic properties. Recent advances have demonstrated the feasibility of achieving negative dielectric property in heterogeneous composites.

Investigating the V(IV)/V(V) electrode reaction in a vanadium redox flow battery - A distribution of relaxation times analysis

Monja Schilling et al.

Summary: New energy storage technologies are required to balance the intermittent power supply of renewable energy sources due to increasing global energy demand and the urgency to act against climate change. The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) shows promise for large-scale energy storage, but challenges in lifetime and efficiency persist. Therefore, conducting experiments that closely mimic operating conditions is crucial for gaining new insights into the reactions and transport processes of a VRFB.

Detection of Lithium-Ion Cells' Degradation through Deconvolution of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy with Distribution of Relaxation Time

Pietro Iurilli et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a methodology for investigating the aging of commercial cylindrical Li-ion cells. The distribution of relaxation time (DRT) method is used to separate and analyze the overlapping polarization effects in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Half-cells and lab-made full-cells are employed to link the electrochemical processes and aging occurring at the anode and cathode sides. Through meticulous analysis of around 500 EIS spectra, the different electrochemical processes are characterized by different time constants and DRT peaks. The results show that DRT peaks can effectively characterize cell aging and aid in the development of reliable estimators for the state of health.

The weakly negative permittivity with low-frequency-dispersion behavior in percolative carbon nanotubes/epoxy nanocomposites at radio-frequency range

Mingxiang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the frequency dispersion mechanism of negative permittivity in carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/epoxy composites. The Debye model is used to describe the dielectric relaxation when the CNT content is below the percolation threshold, while the Drude model explains the negative permittivity resulting from the plasma oscillation of free electrons in CNT networks above the percolation threshold. A novel Debye-Drude model is proposed to explain the low-frequency dispersion and weakly negative permittivity observed when the CNT content is slightly higher than the percolation threshold.

Emulsion Polymerizations for a Sustainable Preparation of Efficient TEMPO-based Electrodes

Simon Muench et al.

Summary: Organic polymer-based batteries offer a promising alternative to metal systems, with a focus on developing redox-active materials and the need for straightforward manufacturing and sustainable production methods. A new synthetic approach for TEMPO-based polymer particles and their electrochemical investigation demonstrated the impact of particle size on electrode performance. The ability of cells to recover from temporary capacity loss at high charge/discharge rates was also observed.
