Fate and removal of pesticides in solid and liquid phases of metropolitan, urban and rural-scale wastewater treatment plants

B. Nas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence, distribution, seasonal variation, and removal of pesticides in three different types of wastewater treatment plants. The results show that the removal efficiency of atrazine (ATZ) is higher compared to chlorpyriphos (CPR) and chlorfenvinphos (CFV). ATZ is mainly removed in the primary treatment stage, while CPR and CFV are primarily removed in the biological treatment stage. Sorption onto sludge is found to be an effective removal mechanism for pesticides. The highest removal efficiency is observed for ATZ in the liquid phase under anaerobic conditions.

Study on performance and mechanism of enhanced low-concentration ammonia nitrogen removal from low-temperature wastewater by iron-loaded biological activated carbon filter

Zhijun Ren et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that iron-loaded biological activated carbon filter can effectively enhance the removal efficiency of low-concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater at low temperature through improving surface properties to increase microbial quantity and metabolic activity, thus improving ammonia nitrogen removal rate. The presence of iron optimized the bacterial community structure and increased the abundances of psychrophilic bacteria and ammonia nitrogen removal bacteria on the surface of Fe-BAC, contributing to the enhanced biological nitrogen removal ability.

Operational performance of corncobs/sawdust biofilters coupled to microbial fuel cells treating domestic wastewater

Montenegro-Rosero Karla et al.

Summary: This study comparatively evaluated biofilters based on corncobs/sawdust coupled to microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for treating domestic wastewater. The results showed that these biofilters performed well in the removal of organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens. Specifically, the hybrid biofilter coupled to MFCs using graphite (HBG) offered the best water-energy nexus conditions.

Stereoselective degradation pathway of amide chiral herbicides and its impacts on plant and bacterial communities in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands

Yucong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the stereoselective degradation patterns and biodegradation mechanisms of metolachlor and napropamide in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands. The higher interphase transferability of napropamide leads to higher degradation rates, while the enantiomers of metolachlor and napropamide demonstrate highly selective biodegradation patterns. The antioxidant enzyme activities and fluorescence parameters of plants are positively correlated with the degradation efficiency and enantioselectivity of the pesticides. Adaptive regulations by plants promote the growth of microbial genera and the enrichment of specific herbicide-degrading bacteria, facilitating the degradation of the pesticides. The presence of Ferruginibacter contributes to the co-removal of napropamide and NO3--N.

Assessment of a novel microalgae-cork based technology for removing antibiotics, pesticides and nitrates from groundwater

Lorenzo Rambaldo et al.

Summary: Groundwater pollution has increased due to intensified agricultural and livestock activities, leading to a reduction in freshwater resources. This study investigated a green technology using a photobioreactor and cork filter to remove pollutants from groundwater. The results showed that the technology was moderately effective in removing nitrates, antibiotics, and pesticides, but its efficiency decreased with shorter hydraulic retention time, with pesticides being the most affected compounds.

Degradation of different pesticides in water by microplasma: the roles of individual radicals and degradation pathways

Muhammad Saiful Islam Khan et al.

Summary: Microplasma was used to reduce pesticide content in water, with different plasma-produced substances playing varying roles in the removal of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides. Nitrogen oxides were crucial for organophosphorus pesticide removal, while dissolved ozone and hydroxyl radicals were major factors in DDT degradation.

Achieving advanced nitrogen removal in a novel partial denitrification/anammox-nitrifying (PDA-N) biofilter process treating low C/N ratio municipal wastewater

Wenkang Lu et al.

Summary: A novel partial denitrification/anammox-nitrifying (PDA-N) biofilter process was developed for treating municipal wastewater, achieving a total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency of 81%. Anammox played a primary role, achieving approximately 98% of the total inorganic nitrogen removal, and the process showed potential for economizing organic carbon demand and oxygen consumption compared to traditional methods.

Dissolved oxygen disturbs nitrate transformation by modifying microbial community, co-occurrence networks, and functional genes during aerobic-anoxic transition

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: There is no consensus among researchers on the impact of dissolved oxygen (DO) on nitrate (NO3--N) transformation and microbial community during aerobic-anoxic transition. Changes in DO significantly influence NO3--N transformation rate and microbial diversity, with higher DO levels accelerating the process.
