Introducing Savie: A Biodegradable Surfactant Enabling Chemo-and Biocatalysis and Related Reactions in Recyclable Water

Joseph R. A. Kincaid et al.

Summary: Savie, derived from vitamin E and polysarcosine, is a biodegradable surfactant used in recyclable water for organic synthesis. It can be used in homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, and biocatalytic transformations, showing higher yields and eliminating the use of wastegenerating organic solvents.

Where Chemocatalysis Meets Biocatalysis: In Water

Harald Groeger et al.

Summary: Chemoenzymatic catalysis involves the merging of sequential reactions using both chemocatalysis and biocatalysis in a single reaction vessel. Running these reactions in water presents a challenge but offers many advantages, as most enzyme-catalyzed reactions occur in water, allowing for a wide synthetic diversity. This article presents creative approaches and solutions to combine chemo- and biocatalysis in water for synthetic purposes.

Tocopherols as antioxidants in lipid-based systems: The combination of chemical and physicochemical interactions determines their efficiency

Nathalie Barouh et al.

Summary: Lipid oxidation is a major concern in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors, and different antioxidant additives are used to prevent or slow down this process. Tocopherols, specifically natural extracts or pure synthetic molecules, are widely used as antioxidants, but research on their efficiency has yielded contradictory results. In addition to chemical reactivity, the physical properties and interactions with other compounds play a crucial role in determining the efficacy of antioxidants like tocopherols.

Lipase-catalyzed esterification in water enabled by nanomicelles. Applications to 1-pot multi-step sequences

Vani Singhania et al.

Summary: In an aqueous micellar medium, commercially available lipase catalyzes esterification with high selectivity in the absence of any co-factors, aided by only 2% designer surfactant TPGS-750-M. An unexpected finding shows that the simple additive PhCF3 can significantly expand the range of usable acid/alcohol combinations. This allows for multiple chemo- and bio-catalyzed 1-pot, multi-step reactions to be performed in water.

Strategies to Tackle the Waste Water from α-Tocopherol-Derived Surfactant Chemistry

Christoph Krell et al.

Summary: The study examined the implications of using surfactant TPGS-750-M in water as a micellar reaction medium on the treatment of water waste and sustainable disposal. By determining the properties of the surfactant, a waste water concept was established which focuses on the lipophilicity and ester group lability of the molecule. The findings suggest preferred ways for designing surfactant processes and managing their aqueous waste streams in a sustainable manner.

Hofmeister versus Neuberg: is ATP really a biological hydrotrope?

Johannes Mehringer et al.

Summary: ATP can hinder the thermal aggregation of proteins and prevent fibrillation of intrinsically disorder proteins, acting as a biological hydrotrope. The interactions of ATP leading to these phenomena are different from traditional hydrotropy, with specific ion effects and interactions with amino acid residues in proteins. Additionally, ATP does not act as a classical hydrotrope due to its strong decrease in the solubility of hydrophobes.
