Investigation of properties change in the reacted molten salts after molten chlorides cyclic thermal treatment of toxic MSWI fly ash

Sihua Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that molten salt thermal treatment technology has a good effect on the thermal detoxification of MSWI fly ash. The main components and physical properties of used molten salts change during cycling reuse, with increasing concentrations of K+ and SO42- and decreasing Cl-. Different salt components have varying effects on the thermal properties of molten salts, with KCl having the greatest influence on the specific heat capacity.

Immobilization of Cd and Pb in soil facilitated by magnetic biochar: metal speciation and microbial community evolution

Yinzhu Diao et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of magnetic sewage sludge biochar (SSB) and rice straw biochar (RSB) on the immobilization of Cd and Pb in paddy soil. The results showed that both SSB and RSB could reduce the DTPA-extractable Cd and Pb, and increase the residual fraction of Cd and Pb. Furthermore, the addition of SSB and RSB also affected the soil pH, TOC content, and the diversity and composition of soil microbial community.

Effect of Si/Al additives on Cl fate during MSWI fly ash thermal treating process

Guiyun Yang et al.

Summary: SiO2 and Al2O3 are suitable additives for municipal solid waste incineration fly ash melting. The addition of SiO2 or Al2O3 significantly promotes the release of HCl. SiO2 has an obvious effect on reducing Cl percentage in residues, while Al2O3 is more likely to retain Cl in the residues.

Yitian Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the leaching properties and risk assessment of two representative solidified/stabilized (S/S) fly ash wastes. The results showed that the cement/chelator treatment exhibited better long-term stability and lower pollution toxicity index compared to chelator treatment. It also restrained the transformation of heavy metals and had erosion resistance and compact pore structure.

Simulation of heavy metals behaviour during Co-processing of fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration with cement raw meal in a rotary kiln

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: This research examines the fixation behavior of Cd and Pb in industrial cement kilns and analyzes the effect of Cl loadings. It finds that Cd forms Cd(OH)2(g) in highly alkaline environments, while nearly 90% of Pb is volatilized as PbCl2(g). The results also show that increased Cl concentrations decrease the proportion of Pb and Cd in clinker but increase their concentrations in kiln dust.

Heavy-Metal Speciation Distribution and Adsorption Characteristics of Cr (VI) in the Soil within Sewage Irrigation Areas

Songtao Liu et al.

Summary: While sewage irrigation contributes to solving water shortages in Northern China, its excessive application leads to environmental issues, such as heavy metal pollution. This study investigated the impacts of wastewater on agricultural soils and the potential risk through sampling and analysis of soil and sediment profiles in sewage irrigation areas. The results indicated a decrease in heavy metal concentrations with depth in soils and improvement in water quality over time. However, some heavy metals exceeded the control values. The speciation distribution and risk assessment demonstrated medium risk for manganese and cadmium, with attention needed for the toxicology of cadmium. Additionally, the study found a correlation between the adsorption rate of soils for Cr (VI) and its initial content.

Summary: Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) is classified as hazardous waste due to its high content of heavy metals, dioxins, and other hazardous substances. This study investigated the physical and chemical properties, enrichment pattern, fugacity pattern, and leaching toxicity of four types of MSWI fly ash. The results showed that the content and distribution of heavy metals were influenced by particle size and the injection of CaO.

Reaction mechanisms underpinning the removal of Cs from simulated Cs-contaminated ash during thermal treatment with NaCl or KCl

Facun Jiao et al.

Summary: The vaporization mechanism of cesium in simulated Cs-contaminated ash during thermal treatment with the addition of NaCl or KCl was examined. Cs vaporized following heat treatment, with vaporization ratio increasing with reaction temperature and salt content. The release of HCl/Cl-2 from NaCl and KCl decomposition had minimal impact on Cs vaporization. N-2 atmosphere facilitated Cs vaporization by delaying salt decomposition and enhancing chlorination of Cs. Alkali chlorides (NaCl and KCl) showed the best performance in promoting Cs vaporization compared to other salts.
