Facet engineering in Au nanoparticles buried in p-Si photocathodes for enhanced photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction

Jiaxin Hu et al.

Summary: The study reports a novel two-step strategy for efficient and selective photoelectrochemical (PEC) conversion of CO2 to CO by integrating uniform Au NPs with controllable Au(111)/Au(200) boundaries on p-Si photocathodes. The presence of Au(111)/Au (200) boundaries significantly reduces the energy barrier for CO2 reduction, while embedding the Au NPs into Si surface improves PEC activity, selectivity, and operational stability. The optimized Au/p-Si photocathode exhibits high CO selectivity of 82.2% and impressive operational stability for over one week, providing valuable insights for the design of photocathodes for solar fuel production.

Recent advances in consolidated bioprocessing for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bioethanol-A review

Selvakumar Periyasamy et al.

Summary: With the growth of the global population, it is crucial to develop long-term technological advancements in order to meet energy demands while preserving the Earth's limited resources. Using renewable energy systems offers numerous benefits, such as stabilizing energy supply and demand, ensuring food security and economic stability, and protecting the environment from pollution. Bioethanol presents a potential alternative as a renewable and long-term energy source, but reducing production costs is critical for its long-term viability and economic competitiveness against petroleum. Converting lignocellulose to bioethanol through consolidated bioprocessing could offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient approach, but further research and optimization are still needed. This review explores biomass pretreatments, process enhancements, recombinant microbial catalysts and enzymes, and metabolic engineering in the context of consolidated bioprocessing, providing an overview to guide future research in lignocellulosic biomass for bioethanol production.

Recent advances in direct gas-solid-phase photocatalytic conversion of CO2 for porous photocatalysts under different CO2 atmospheres

Yajuan Ma et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction is a promising strategy for mitigating global warming and providing green fuels and chemicals. However, current photocatalysts have low adsorption capacity and limited CO2 dissolution, resulting in unsatisfactory conversion rates and selectivity in aqueous solutions. This paper reviews the latest advances in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and polymer-based photocatalysts for gas-solid CO2 conversion. Porous photocatalysts exhibit high efficiency in photocatalysis due to favorable CO2 adsorption and selectivity, even at ultralow CO2 concentrations or in the presence of oxygen. Challenges and future perspectives for developing multifunctional materials with high CO2 adsorption and photocatalytic conversion performances are also discussed.
