Achieving Optimal Paper Properties: A Layered Multiscale kMC and LSTM-ANN-Based Control Approach for Kraft Pulping

Parth Shah et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel multiscale model to optimize the kraft pulping process and obtain desired paper properties. The model combines mass and energy balance equations with a layered kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) algorithm to predict the degradation of wood chips, the depolymerization of cellulose, and the spatio-temporal evolution of the Kappa number and cellulose degree of polymerization (DP). A surrogate LSTM-ANN model is trained on data generated from the multiscale model to design an LSTM-ANN-based model predictive controller, which achieves desired set-point values of the Kappa number and cellulose DP while considering process constraints.

Dynamic, hollow nanotubular networks with superadjustable pH-responsive and temperature resistant rheological characteristics

Shuhao Liu et al.

Summary: Recently, there has been a growing interest in stimuli-responsive and adaptable materials in various fields and applications. This paper reports the design of a pH-responsive viscoelastic supramolecular complex (VSC) based on the complexation of a new long-chain amino-amide and maleic acid. The VSC demonstrated a sol-gel-sol transition from pH 2 to 10 and showed potential applications in hydraulic fracturing and enhanced oil recovery due to its superior temperature tolerance and viscosity control.

Nanostructural and rheological transitions of pH-responsive supramolecular systems involving a zwitterionic amphiphile and a triamine

Bhargavi Bhat et al.

Summary: Supramolecular aqueous complexes of a synthesized zwitterionic surfactant and diethylenetriamine display pH-tunable rheological properties without the need for a co-surfactant. The dynamic interplay among the constituents leads to rich phase behavior, including hollow nanotubules, bilayers, and vesicles. The study also reveals the importance of the hollow nanotubular structure for achieving chain entanglement geometries with reduced mesh size.

Development of a soft sensor to estimate the rheological properties of self-assembled systems: application to wormlike micelles (WLMs)

Silabrata Pahari et al.

Summary: The application of synthetic supercolloids is extensive, requiring efficient large-scale production. While some studies focus on controlled production, there is a lack of online estimation of rheology during the production process. Designing a soft sensor that can accurately estimate process states is crucial.

SAXS-guided unbiased coarse-grained Monte Carlo simulation for identification of self-assembly nanostructures and dimensions

Silabrata Pahari et al.

Summary: Recent studies have identified that solvated amphiphiles can form nanostructured self-assemblies, known as dynamic binary complexes (DBCs), in the presence of ions. This research combines small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments and coarse-grained Monte Carlo (CGMC) simulations to determine the detailed three-dimensional nanostructure of DBCs, as well as explain the pH tunability of the system.

Control of Microparticle Assembly

Xun Tang et al.

Summary: A colloidal system consists of micrometer-sized particles suspended in a liquid, and its state can be measured in real time using imaging techniques and image processing. The assembly of particles is driven by interactions between particles and the surrounding liquid, as well as external fields. By understanding the system dynamics and manipulating the interactions, the assembly process can be controlled in real time using feedback control.

Multiscale modeling and optimal operation of millifluidic synthesis of perovskite quantum dots: Towards size-controlled continuous manufacturing

Niranjan Sitapure et al.

Summary: A multiscale model for continuous flow manufacturing of colloidal perovskite quantum dots is proposed, integrating a first-principled kinetic Monte Carlo model and a continuum model. By adjusting precursor concentration and superficial flow velocity, the size of quantum dots can be fine-tuned, with a neural network surrogate model designed to optimize input trajectories for achieving desired quantum dot sizes.

Optimal pumping schedule with high-viscosity gel for uniform distribution of proppant in unconventional reservoirs

Silabrata Pahari et al.

Summary: The use of non-Newtonian high-viscosity gel in hydraulic-fractured unconventional reservoirs can enhance hydrocarbon recovery, but the understanding of gel rheology's role in production is limited. Researchers developed a model to simulate the impact of different rheological parameters on oil production, guiding the optimization of gel selection and pumping schedules. The study aims to maximize oil production from unconventional reservoirs by utilizing optimal high-viscosity gel and designing a model predictive controller for pumping schedules.

A slip-spring framework to study relaxation dynamics of entangled wormlike micelles with kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm

Silabrata Pahari et al.

Summary: This study extends the rheology modeling of polymers to wormlike micelles (WLMs) and successfully predicts linear rheology and characteristic relaxation times. The findings show that reptation leads to a continuous increase in viscosity, while union-scission contributes to a decrease in viscosity of WLM solutions under higher salinity and pH conditions.

Deep learning for characterizing the self-assembly of three-dimensional colloidal systems

Jared O'Leary et al.

Summary: Creating a systematic framework for characterizing the structural states of colloidal self-assembly systems is essential. Using deep learning to reduce the dimensionality of neighborhood graphs and hierarchical clustering techniques for partitioning the space enhances understanding and classification. Demonstrating the framework on various systems, including self-assembly under isothermal conditions and evaporation-induced self-assembly, shows its generalizability and effectiveness.
