Cavitation behavior and mixing performance of antisolvent precipitation process in an ultrasonic micromixer

Zhikai Liu et al.

Summary: A facile and robust ultrasonic micromixer was developed for intensified antisolvent precipitation via ultrasonic cavitation. The gas supersaturation generated from solvent-antisolvent mixing was identified as a novel driving force for the formation of cavitation bubbles (CBs). These CBs translated across the microchannel, inducing intense transverse flow and enabling rapid mixing of solvent-antisolvent over a wide range of Reynolds number and flow rate ratio. The ultrasonic micromixer demonstrated its potential as a new tool for antisolvent precipitation by synthesizing size-controllable and monodisperse polymeric nanoparticles in a high-throughput and reproducible manner.

Effect of ultrasonic waveforms on gas-liquid mass transfer in microreactors

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different ultrasonic waveforms on the gas-liquid mass transfer process. It is found that continuous rectangular waveform generates stronger bubble oscillation and higher mass transfer coefficient compared to continuous triangular and sinusoidal waveforms. Additionally, by optimizing the parameters of pulsed ultrasound, high mass transfer efficiency can be achieved.

Optimal self-assembly of lipid nanoparticles (LNP) in a ring micromixer

Manon Ripoll et al.

Summary: Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have been widely studied for their potential in RNA and DNA delivery, including as mRNA vectors for COVID vaccines. Microfluidics, particularly the ring micromixer, offers advantages for LNP production, such as high mixing quality, low-stress conditions, and fast preparation. This study focuses on the ring micromixer and identifies three regimes that control the mixing performance. Using cryo-TEM and biochemical analysis, the study also shows the correlation between mixing performance and the characteristics of the LNPs produced. The study emphasizes the importance of flow-rate ratio and proposes a physical criterion for producing LNPs with optimal characteristics.
