Techno-economic process parameter studies for hydrogel composite production from corncob biomass and its application as fertilizer releasing agent

Hemang Sharma et al.

Summary: This research work focused on the techno-economic process design of cellulose hydrogel synthesis from corncob biomass and analyzed their swelling and kinetic behaviors. Raw corncob was fractionated through alkali treatment to obtain cellulose fibers, which were then copolymerized with gelatin to produce cellulose hydrogel composite. The swelling efficiency of the cellulose hydrogel composite was investigated in different salt solutions and its drying kinetics were also studied. Techno-economic analysis estimated the operating cost and annual revenue for the hydrogel production process. The superior properties of the hydrogel make it a potential candidate for water retention and fertilizer releasing agent in agriculture.

Pyrolysis temperature affects the physiochemical characteristics of lanthanum-modified biochar derived from orange peels: Insights into the mechanisms of tetracycline adsorption by spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations

Zhihao Chen et al.

Summary: Biochar modified with LaCl3 from orange peels was used to enhance the adsorption of tetracycline. Different parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, adsorbent dosage, initial pH, and coexisting ions were investigated. The results showed that higher pyrolysis temperature increased the specific surface area and functional groups of the modified biochar, resulting in higher adsorption capacity. The La-BC prepared at 700 degrees C achieved the highest adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Freundlich model. The presence of humic acid inhibited TC adsorption, while coexisting ions did not significantly affect the adsorption capacity, especially for BC@La-700.

Mechanistic insight into loading of doxorubicin hydrochloride onto carbonized FeNPs@ZIF-8 composite

Wanling Cai et al.

Summary: The increasing global efflux of antibiotics into aquatic environments has significant detrimental impacts on natural ecosystems. Consequently, the controlled release of antibiotics and their metabolites is an important issue. In this study, a new carbonized iron nanoparticles-metal organic framework (C-Fe3O4@ZIF-8) composite was developed for loading doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) with high efficiency. The adsorption mechanism of DOX on C-Fe3O4@ZIF-8 was found to involve surface complexation and electrostatic interaction, and the loading mechanism was proposed based on specific site adsorption. The magnetic property of C-Fe3O4@ZIF-8 also allowed for easy separation and desirable recycle/reuse performance.

Adsorption of tetracycline hydrochloride on layered double hydroxide loaded carbon nanotubes and site energy distribution analysis

Caifeng Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel composite material LDH@CNT was prepared using an in-situ method, which had a favorable adsorbent structure due to the mutual support of LDHs and CNTs. The adsorption kinetics of LDHs, CNTs, and LDH@CNT composites for tetracycline were well described by intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order models, indicating that the adsorption site played a major role. The Generalized Langmuir model was found to better describe the adsorption process than the Langmuir model, suggesting multiple interactions between tetracycline and the composite material. Site energy distribution theory combined with molecular simulation explained the adsorption mechanisms, and the removal of tetracycline by LDHs, CNTs, and LDH@CNT composites was calculated. The results showed that LDH@CNT composites had lower average site energies compared to LDHs and CNTs, but had more exposed adsorption active sites, leading to improved removal efficiency of tetracycline.
