Microfluidic synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles in droplet-based microreactors

Lei Zou et al.

Summary: Microfluidic devices are widely used for the controlled synthesis of various nanomaterials through continuous microreactors. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized using droplet-based continuous microreactors in a microfluidic chip. The size and properties of nanoparticles were investigated by varying the flow rate and temperature of the aqueous and oil streams. The efficient chemical reaction initiated by fusing two aqueous droplets showed superior results compared to conventional methods for synthesizing Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Santosh L. Gawali et al.

Summary: A facile approach for the preparation of protein conjugated glutaric acid functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles is reported, showing improved colloidal stability and heating efficacy in different media. These nanoparticles exhibit good stability and superparamagnetism, with enhanced heating efficacy compared to the original nanoparticles due to surface passivation by protein. Additionally, they demonstrate biocompatibility with normal cells and substantial cellular internalization in cancer cells, suggesting potential application in hyperthermia therapy.

Effect of Fluid Flow on Crystallization in a Segmented Flow Microchannel

Souta Yamasaki et al.

Summary: Segmented flow crystallization has attracted engineers' attention due to its narrower crystal size distribution and higher crystallization rate. This study focused on the influence of fluid behavior on crystallization, analyzing crystal motion and mass transfer using computational fluid dynamics. The high shear rate in segmented flow leads to a higher mass transfer rate, which is commonly observed in this type of crystallization.

Mathematical modeling and experimental validation of continuous slug-flow tubular crystallization with ultrasonication-induced nucleation and spatially varying temperature

Nicholas J. Mozdzierz et al.

Summary: Continuous slug-flow tubular crystallization offers a cost-effective method for producing crystals, with experiments showing reasonably consistent results in crystal size distribution compared to predictions from a population balance model. The use of spatial temperature profile and directed non-contact ultrasonication has been effective in inducing primary nucleation, enabling a wide variety of crystal size distributions to be generated in the process. Factors contributing to weaker agreement between experimental data and model predictions in certain conditions are discussed.

Enhancement of gas-liquid mass transfer by nanofluids in a microchannel under Taylor flow regime

Mengmeng Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the gas-liquid two-phase flow and mass transfer enhancement by nanoparticles in CO2 absorption process using SiO2 nanofluids under Taylor flow regime. The presence of nanoparticles effectively enhances gas-liquid mass transfer, with K(L)a and pressure drop increasing with gas-liquid flow rate ratio, and CO2 absorption efficiency decreasing. However, K(L)a, CO2 absorption efficiency, and pressure drop increase with the increase of particle concentration in slurry.
