The plastisphere microbiome in alpine soils alters the microbial genetic potential for plastic degradation and biogeochemical cycling

Joel Ruthi et al.

Summary: In this study, the impacts of different plastics on the genetic potential of the soil microbiome in alpine soils were investigated using shotgun metagenomics. The results showed that biodegradable plastics, such as Ecovio and BI-OPL, had a greater impact on the soil microbiome compared to polyethylene, with fungi, alpha-, and 8-Proteobacteria dominating on the biodegradable films.

Bioconversion of organic wastes into value-added products: A review

Shraddha Chavan et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has led to an increased demand for food, feed, and chemicals, resulting in higher use of fossil resources and organic waste generation. Valorization of organic waste, due to its high abundance, renewability, and ease of accessibility, offers a potential solution to waste management issues. Utilization of industrial wastes rich in organic and nutrient content for producing value-added products like biofuels and bioplastics via microbial fermentation processes is a promising approach to sustainable waste management.

Impact of mechanical and thermo-chemical pretreatments to enhance anaerobic digestion of poly(lactic acid)

G. Cazaudehore et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of pretreatments on the biodegradation of biodegradable plastic, polylactic acid (PLA), in anaerobic digestion systems. The results show that mechanical pretreatment improves the degradation rate of PLA, while thermal and acid pretreatments have similar effects on PLA solubilization. Thermo-alkaline pretreatment significantly increases solubilization and biodegradation of PLA at lower temperatures.

Deeper insights into the effects of substrate to inoculum ratio selection on the relationship of kinetic parameters, microbial communities, and key metabolic pathways during the anaerobic digestion of food waste

Yanzeng Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explored the effects of different substrate to inoculum ratios (S/I) on the kinetic parameters, microbial communities, and metabolic pathways during the anaerobic digestion process of food waste. The results showed that low S/I ratios were favorable for methanogenesis, while high S/I ratios led to irreversible acidification. S/I = 1:3 had the highest methane yield, more apparent microbial cooperation, and the highest abundance of key enzymes involved in the methanogenesis pathway.

Lab- and pilot-scale anaerobic digestion of municipal bio-waste and potential of digestate for biogas upgrading sustained by microbial analysis

Panagiotis Tsapekos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the microbial ecology in lab- and pilot-scale biogas reactors fed with bio-waste. The results showed that the indigenous microbial community in the bio-waste was almost extinct during the digestion process. The AD microbiome was mainly composed of members belonging to the orders Clostridiales and Bacteroidales, whose relative abundance dynamically changed to adapt to operational conditions.

New insight into selective Na+ stress on acidogenic fermentation of waste activated sludge from microbial perspective: Hydrolase secretion, fermentative bacteria screening, and metabolism modification

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: This study found that selective Na+ stress can alter microbial community and hydrolase activity, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids. By screening roles, selective Na+ stress leads to the dominance of hydrolytic bacteria and acidogens, enhancing anaerobic fermentation performance of waste activated sludge.

Anaerobic bacterial degradation of protein and lipid macromolecules in subarctic marine sediment

Claus Pelikan et al.

Summary: This study revealed the identities, trophic interactions, and genomic features of bacteria that degrade proteins and lipids in sulfidic subarctic marine sediments. Psychromonas species were identified as important primary degraders of both proteins and lipids, with different populations utilizing either proteins or lipids. The study also showed trophic transfer of carbon to sulfate-reducing bacteria within a short time frame.

Thermophilic and mesophilic biogas production from PLA-based materials: Possibilities and limitations

Katarzyna Bernat et al.

Summary: This study determined the detailed kinetics of biogas production from PLA at 58°C and 37°C, revealing lag phases at both temperatures and differences in biogas production rate over time. The findings suggest that PLA digestion in anaerobic conditions is a slower process compared to other biowaste materials, requiring separate digesters in thermophilic conditions and being unacceptable at technical scale in mesophilic conditions.

Anaerobic digestion: An alternative resource treatment option for food waste in China

Chenxi Jin et al.

Summary: With the implementation of zero-waste city and waste classification in China, there is an urgent need for advanced food waste treatment technology. Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology has attracted much attention in China due to its advantages including clean energy production, low carbon emissions, and suitability for large-scale treatment. Chinese policies are conducive to the development and promotion of AD technology for food waste treatment.

Distinct growth stages controlled by the interplay of deterministic and stochastic processes in functional anammox biofilms

Robert Niederdorfer et al.

Summary: The study reveals three distinct stages of anammox biofilm development, characterized by a dynamic succession and an interplay of both stochastic and deterministic processes. These growth stages are essential for the growth of anammox bacteria and the formation of a biofilm community structure that supports desired metabolic and functional capacities in anammox biofilm reactors. The improved understanding of anammox-community ecology and biofilm development has practical implications for the start-up, configuration, and optimization of anammox biofilm reactors.
