Analysis of the mechanism of energy consumption for CO2 capture in a power system

Yawen Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a thermodynamic analysis method with a new criterion to reveal the mechanism of energy consumption in a power system integrating CO2 capture. The study finds that both the separation process and the energy provision for CO2 separation contribute to the energy penalty. Improving separation efficiency and shifting to an external energy source can help reduce energy consumption.

Cost and Emissions Reduction in CO2 Capture Plant Dependent on Heat Exchanger Type and Different Process Configurations: Optimum Temperature Approach Analysis

Solomon Aforkoghene Aromada et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of a plate heat exchanger (PHE) was evaluated and compared to conventional shell and tube heat exchangers in terms of energy cost and capital cost. It was found that the PHE outperformed other heat exchangers economically and in emissions reduction. The optimal temperature approach for the PHE cases was achieved at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius, resulting in low energy consumption and indirect emissions. For the lean vapour compression CO2 capture process, the use of optimum PHE led to a 16% reduction in CO2 avoided cost, and considering the available excess heat further reduced costs by up to 34%.

Techno-economic assessment of post-combustion CO2 capture using aqueous piperazine at different flue gas compositions and flowrates via a general optimization methodology

Jose-Francisco Perez-Calvo et al.

Summary: This study presents an overall techno-economic assessment of a post-combustion CO2 capture process using aqueous piperazine. A two-step techno-economic optimization approach is developed to minimize work and maximize productivity. The results show that the specific reboiler duties increase as the flue gas CO2 concentrations decrease, while the costs are computed at the technical optimal conditions as a function of CO2 capture efficiency, flue gas flowrate, and CO2 concentration. Maps of minimum cost and associated optimal conditions are obtained to evaluate the economic feasibility and performance of the capture process under different cost scenarios and assumptions.
