Oxygen doped graphitic carbon nitride with regulatable local electron density and band structure for improved photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Xinxin Long et al.

Summary: Oxygen atoms with lone pair electrons are used to enhance the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride. A one-step annealing strategy is employed to prepare O-doped graphitic carbon nitride, which shows improved photocatalytic performance for the degradation of bisphenol A. Experimentally and theoretically, it is confirmed that the introduction of O modifies the band structure and promotes electron transfer, carrier generation and separation, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance.

Removal of aflatoxin B1 and zearalenone by clay mineral materials: In the animal industry and environment

Na Zhang et al.

Summary: Mycotoxin pollution is a continuous issue in feed and food safety, posing risks to livestock, human health, and the environment. Clay minerals have emerged as a widely used approach in the animal industry to reduce mycotoxin levels. This review summarizes the adverse effects of mycotoxins on animals and humans, their circulation in the biological chain, and the potential of clay minerals for adsorption, degradation, and antifungal properties. The potential applications of clay minerals in animal husbandry and environmental protection are also explored.

Adsorptive removal of aflatoxin B1 from vegetable oils via novel adsorbents derived from a metal-organic framework

Fei Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, three kinds of Cu-BTC MOF-derived porous materials were prepared by different carbonization temperature and found to have excellent adsorption capacity for AFB1 in vegetable oils. These porous carbonaceous materials could remove over 90% of AFB1 within 30 minutes without compromising the quality of oils, demonstrating their potential as novel adsorbents for detoxification in food industry.

Contamination status of major mycotoxins in agricultural product and food stuff in Europe

Shujuan Luo et al.

Summary: Food and feed contamination by mycotoxins, mainly produced by filamentous fungi such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Alternaria, can cause serious health issues to humans and animals. While most European countries have set maximum limits for mycotoxins, contaminated agricultural products still exceed these limits in the market. Constant adjustments to maximum limits, establishment of monitoring teams and improvements in agricultural production methods have been made to protect human health and food trade in Europe.
