Polyethylenimine-mica nanosheets/cellulose nanofibers stacked loose nanofiltration membrane for effective dye/salt separation

Qiuhui Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel loose NF membrane was prepared by assembling PEI-modified mica and cellulose nanofibers on a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile substrate. The loose brick-mud structure formed by the combination of PEI-mica nanosheets and CNFs allowed water molecules and salt ions to pass through while resisting dye molecules. The membrane exhibited high water permeability, superior dye/salt separation efficiency, and good antifouling properties, making it promising for practical textile wastewater treatment.

Polyethylenimine grafted hollow fiber membranes for fast dye separation

Peng Ge et al.

Summary: This article presents a facile strategy to fabricate polyethylenimine-grafted polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes (PSF-PEI HFMs) for efficient dye separation. Unlike traditional interfacial polymerization, these HFMs were directly prepared via quaternization of PEI with brominated polyethersulfone UF HFMs. The PSF-PEI HFMs exhibit ultra-high water permeance and outstanding rejection for dyes, while maintaining low rejections for inorganic salts. Additionally, they show excellent stability and antifouling abilities, making them highly promising for industrial applications in fast dye separation.

Highly permeable benzene-trisulfonyl chloride-based polysulfonamide membranes fabricated by interfacial polymerization for acid-resistant nanofiltration

Wei Lai et al.

Summary: Highly acid-resistant nanofiltration membranes with excellent separation performance were fabricated using benzene-1,3,5-trisulfonyl chloride (BTSC) by interfacial polymerization with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and piperazine (PIP) on the polyethersulfone (PES) substrate. The PEI-BTSC/PES membrane exhibited a pore size of 0.65 nm, narrower than conventional acid-resistant NF membranes. The PEI-BTSC-H/PES membrane showed a MgCl2 rejection of 95.5% and a high permeance of 43.5 L h-1 m-2 bar-1 with excellent acid-resistance.

Highly permeable positively charged nanofiltration membranes with multilayer structures for multiple heavy metal removals

Xiaoxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: By employing a chitosan interlayer-assisted low-temperature interfacial polymerization and surface grafting polyethyleneimine (CIL-IP-P) strategy, a highly permeable and positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membrane with multilayer structures was successfully prepared. The membrane exhibited improved performance by increasing hydrophilicity through the chitosan interlayer and enhancing electro-positivity and specific surface area through polyethyleneimine grafting, thereby overcoming the trade-off between rejection and permeance in conventional positively charged NF membranes.

MXene Nanosheet Templated Nanofiltration Membranes toward Ultrahigh Water Transport

Daliang Xu et al.

Summary: By utilizing a classical interfacial polymerization reaction on a two-dimensional lamellar layer of transition-metal carbides (MXene), a high-performance TFC nanofiltration membrane was successfully fabricated. The MXene layer aided in the absorption of reactive monomers, resulting in a thinner outer polyamide film and preventing the formation of polyamide in the substrate pores. This research presents a feasible strategy for producing high-performance nanofiltration membranes using two-dimensional nanosheets as templated interfaces.

Forward Solute Transport in Forward Osmosis Using a Freestanding Graphene Oxide Membrane

Su Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the freestanding GOM has better separation performance for multivalent ions than monovalent ions in the FO mode. There is an information gap between calculated and experimental forward solute flux values, especially when charged solutes are used, and the electrical double layer (EDL) is thick. The study suggests that the EDL inside the GOM has a screening effect on forward ion transport during FO, even with relatively high water flux.
