Host-guest coordination self-assembly gives anion exchange membranes better stability

Yongjiang Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper fabricates anion exchange membranes (AEM) with a macrocyclic host-guest structure and dynamic self-protection, which exhibit high ionic conductivity and alkali stability. The membranes achieve a hydroxide conductivity of 114 mS cm-1 at 80 degrees C and maintain 93% of their pre-test performance even after immersion in 5 M KOH at 80 degrees C for 1000 h. The highest peak power density of 406 mW cm-2 at 60 degrees C is achieved after the assembly of a single cell. Therefore, the new design using a long chain structure containing both host-guest as side chains is a promising direction for improving AEM performance.

Jia Hui Chen et al.

Summary: A series of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) incorporating crosslinked poly(biphenyl N-methylpiperidine) (PBP) and spirobisindane-based intrinsically microporous poly(ether ketone) (PEK-SBI) have been prepared to achieve high ionic conductivity and improved chemical stability. The AEMs exhibit phase separated structures, promoting the hydroxide ion conductivity. Among them, the sIPN-90/10(PEK-SBI) AEM shows the highest hydroxide ion conductivity of 122.4 mS cm-1 and good alkaline stability. Moreover, it can achieve a peak power density of 481 mW cm-2 in a hydrogen/oxygen single cell.

3D-Zipped Interface: In Situ Covalent-Locking for High Performance of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Xian Liang et al.

Summary: By introducing a 3D-interfacial zipping concept, the challenges of mass transport resistances in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are addressed, leading to enhanced power densities and long-term stabilities. The use of a bi-cationic quaternary-ammonium-based polyelectrolyte creates a covalently locked interface that prevents delamination without sacrificing fuel cell performance, as demonstrated in ex situ and in situ tests. A high power density of 1.5 W cm(-2) was achieved in a H-2/O-2 AEMFC test, with performance retention for at least 120 hours at a high current density of 0.6 A cm(-2).
