Preparation of a Low-Protein-Fouling and High-Protein-Retention Membrane via Novel Pre-Hydrolysis Treatment of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)

Dong Xu et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel method for preparing PAN membranes with a highly hydrophilic and negatively charged surface as well as interior structure. The resulting membrane showed a highly hydrophilic surface and strong protein retention properties, making it a potential candidate for protein production or separation processes.

Dynamic variations in DOM and DBPs formation potential during surface water treatment by ozonation-nanofiltration: Using spectroscopic indices approach

Muhammad Saboor Siddique et al.

Summary: The combination of ozone and nanofiltration in drinking water treatment effectively separates dissolved organic matter, reducing disinfection by-products formation. Ozone treatment decreases molecular weight of DOM and enhances removal of DBP precursors. Spectroscopic indices are useful in tracking DOM changes and DBP formation potential.

Brine desalination via pervaporation using kaolin-intercalated hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile membranes

Hasan Fareed et al.

Summary: In this study, the PV performance of PAN-based mixed matrix membranes was improved by adding kaolin, resulting in increased hydrophilicity and water sorption capacity. The addition of 2% kaolin enhanced membrane properties and led to outstanding permeation fluxes and salt rejection rates under different salt concentrations.

Which pre-oxidation methods to choose? From perspective of DBPs formation and toxicities reduction

Zixiang He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of three commonly used oxidants (ozone, chlorine, and potassium permanganate) on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and the toxicity of treated water in drinking water treatment plants. The results showed that pre-KMnO4 significantly reduced HAAs formation, pre-HClO directly produced THMs and HAAs, and pre-O3 performed best on NDMA reduction. Pre-oxidation methods also influenced the transformation of organic matter and the toxicity of water.

The role of medium molecular weight organics on reducing disinfection by-products and fouling prevention in nanofiltration

Qingyun Song et al.

Summary: Nanofiltration (NF) is commonly used in water treatment to control the formation and removal of disinfection by-products (DBPs). This study investigated the impact of natural organic matter (NOM) of different molecular weights on NF membrane fouling and DBPFP. The results showed that medium molecular weight NOM reduced membrane fouling and DBPFP by forming a protective layer on the NF surface. This study highlights the importance of considering NOM molecular weight in NF-based water treatment processes.

Chlorination by-products formation in a drinking water distribution system treated by ultrafiltration associated with pre-ozonation or coagulation/ flocculation

R. Alvarez-Arroyo et al.

Summary: One of the main drawbacks of ultrafiltration membranes is their limited capacity to remove organic matter, which can lead to the development of biofilm and deterioration of water quality. This study evaluated the water quality evolution in a experimental drinking water distribution system (DWDS) fed with water treated by spiral-wound-polyvinylidenefluoride UF membranes. The findings showed that ozonation treatment caused a higher increase in the formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, leading to poorer water quality and raising doubts about the potability of the water in DWDS.

Biologically Enhanced Coagulation-Ultrafiltration Process for Healthy Water Production with Low Fouling Propensity

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the potential advantages of using a biologically enhanced coagulation-ultrafiltration (CUF) process for treating drinking water, including superior removal of natural organic matter (NOM) and enhanced anti-fouling performance. The biologically enhanced CUF process showed significantly higher membrane flux compared to conventional CUF and direct UF processes, and it effectively removed biopolymers, which are the main cause of membrane fouling. The combined process also resulted in a reduction in hydrophobicity, aromaticity, and molecular weight of dissolved organics.

Simultaneous alkaline hydrolysis and non-solvent induced phase separation method for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane with highly hydrophilic and enhanced anti-fouling performance

Xuan Yang et al.

Summary: Microporous membranes are widely used for water and wastewater purification, but organic fouling hinders their applications. A new preparation method combining alkaline hydrolysis and NIPS processes results in highly hydrophilic and anti-fouling PAN membranes with improved structural and chemical properties. These membranes show slow flux decline and high flux recovery during filtration, indicating great potential for challenging separation applications in water treatment.

Fluorescence moieties as a surrogate for residual chlorine in three drinking water networks

Tahir Maqbool et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of seasonal variations on chlorine consumption and DOM composition, finding a direct relationship between chlorine consumption and N-Nitrosodimethylamine, with elevated consumption in the wet season and dominance of humic-like components. Fluorescence moieties related to humic substances acted as a surrogate for chlorine consumption, and single fluorescence peaks showed potential for on-line monitoring and portable purposes. This field-based study demonstrated the application of fluorescence spectroscopy in designing chlorine dose for optimal residual chlorine at consumer's tap.
