Solid polymer electrolyte membrane based on cationic polynorbornenes with pending imidazolium functional groups for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries

Zengwei Qin et al.

Summary: Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have gained attention in the field of lithium-ion batteries due to their safety performance, higher specific capacity, and structural designability. Poly ionic liquids (PILs) have attracted researchers because of their high ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, thermal stability, and less-flammability compared to liquid electrolytes. A triblock copolymer was prepared by attaching imidazole cations to the side chain of the polymer and copolymerizing with epoxy-functionalized norbornene monomer and norbornene monomer. The resulting solid polymer electrolyte membrane (SPEM) exhibited excellent ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, and thermal stability.

Quaternized Polynorbornene Random Copolymers for Fuel Cell Devices

Michelle Lehmann et al.

Summary: A series of quaternized polynorbornene random copolymers were synthesized via vinyl addition polymerization, and the impact of polymer composition on their properties was elucidated. The quaternary ammonium alkyl tether length and the ratio of n-hexylnorbornene to unsubstituted norbornene were tailored to control the copolymer properties. The study provides important insight into design parameters for quaternized polynorbornenes.

Cationic palladium(ii)-acetylacetonate complexes bearing pyridinyl imine ligands as catalysts for the hydroamination of phenylacetylene and polymerization of norbornene

Dmitrii S. Suslov et al.

Summary: Acetylacetonate palladium(ii) complexes bearing pyridinyl imine ligands [Pd(acac)(L)]BF4 were synthesized by nitrile displacement in [Pd(acac)(MeCN)2]BF4 with bidentate ligands L of type 2-C5H4N-CH=N-(CH2)nOMe or 2-C5H4N-CH=N-Ar. The structures of complexes were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry, NMR, and DFT. The complexes catalyze hydroamination of phenylacetylene with aniline to give the Markovnikov imine product as well as polymerization of norbornene.

CO2-selective vinyl-addition polymers from nadimides: Synthesis and performance for membrane gas separation

Ivan Nazarov et al.

Summary: In this study, polymers with saturated rigid main chains and imide moieties were synthesized and evaluated as potential membrane materials for gas separation. These polymers exhibited desirable mechanical properties, good thermal stability, and high CO2 permeability with attractive CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH(4) selectivities. The performance of this polymer exceeded that of other VAP and metathesis nadimide polymers for the separation of CO2/CH4.

Switching on/switching off solubility controlled permeation of hydrocarbons through glassy polynorbornenes by the length of side alkyl groups

Alyona I. Wozniak et al.

Summary: The length of the alkyl side group plays a key role in the gas separation performance, with shorter side-alkyl groups leading to higher gas permeability. Surprisingly, vinyl-addition polynorbornene with methyl groups displayed both higher CO2 permeability and higher CO2/CH4 selectivity, contradicting traditional trade-offs. The solubility-controlled permeability of hydrocarbons is another notable feature, particularly in polymers with alkyl-substituents larger than ethyl-groups.

Vinyl-Addition Fluoroalkoxysilyl-Substituted Polynorbornene Membranes for CO2/CH4 Separation

Xinyi Wang et al.

Summary: Natural gas production and utilization have increased significantly in recent years, necessitating improved methods for purification. This study focuses on the development of polymeric materials for natural gas purification and demonstrates that incorporating fluoroalkoxysilyl substituents can enhance CO2/CH4 permselectivity. The findings suggest that the observed increase in selectivity is primarily due to improved CO2 sorption in the fluorine-containing polymers.

Summary: Silicon-substituted polynorbornenes are polymeric membrane materials with combined properties of glassy and rubbery polymers, showing attractive performance in CO2/N-2 separation and separation of gaseous hydrocarbons. A new synthesis approach allowed preparation of high-molecular-weight polymers based on pure exo-isomers of Si-containing norbornenes, and their gas transport properties were studied. The influence of substituent orientation and nature on membrane properties was evaluated, with additional data on BET, SEM, WAXD, and fractional free volumes reported.

Cocatalyst versus precatalyst impact on the vinyl-addition polymerization of norbornenes with polar groups: looking at the other side of the coin

Evgeniya Bermesheva et al.

Summary: The research examines the influence of precatalyst and cocatalyst on the vinyl-addition polymerization of norbornenes with polar groups, finding the proper combination of the two components is crucial for successful polymerization. The resulting polymers' catalytic activity and molecular weights can be efficiently tuned by the nature of both pre- and cocatalyst, with cocatalyst impacting differently based on the nature of the monomer groups. These findings provide insights and opportunities for further exploration in obtaining new high-performance polymers.

Highly efficient vinylic addition polymerization of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene using benzylic palladium complexes as precatalysts

Ignacio Perez-Ortega et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that benzylic palladium complexes are suitable precatalysts for the challenging vinylic addition polymerization of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene (VNB). A highly active catalyst can be formed with a mixture of [Pd-2(mu-Br)(2)(eta(3)-C6H5CHCH2C6F5)(2)], PCy3 and NaBAr4F, resulting in high molecular weight polymers of VNB with preserved exocyclic pendant double bonds. The nature of the counterion, with BAr4F- being the most efficient among several tested, plays a crucial role in the propagation of the polymerization process.
