Simple fence modification increases land movement prospects for freshwater turtles on floodplains

Summary: Installing conservation fences to prohibit feral animal access to wetlands can be a barrier for non-target species. A study conducted in northern Australia found that most turtles caught in fenced or unfenced wetlands had a shell width greater than the fence mesh width, indicating that they could easily escape. Manipulative experiments showed that turtles were able to locate and pass through gaps in the fence, highlighting the importance of retrofitting gates to existing sites for conservation purposes.
