Mapping synchronization properties in a three-element laterally coupled laser array

Qi Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigate synchronized chaos (SC) and spatiotemporal chaos (STC) in a three-element laterally-coupled laser array with four waveguiding structures. We analyze the dynamics and synchronization properties of the laser array using coupled rate equations and generate spatiotemporal dynamic maps to identify regions of SC, STC, and non-chaos in the parameter space of interest. Our results demonstrate the significant role of key parameters, including laser separation ratio, pump rate, linewidth enhancement factor, and frequency detuning, in the array dynamics and synchronization properties. Furthermore, we show that the laser array composed of purely real index guiding exhibits more distinct boundaries between SC and STC in a wider parameter space compared to arrays composed of other waveguiding structures. Additionally, we demonstrate that the proposed laser array enables two scenarios of parallel random bit generation (PRBG) by applying the same post-processing techniques to chaos sources based on SC and STC dynamic states. Our findings provide a comprehensive study of the collective dynamics in the three-element laterally-coupled laser array and pave the way for PRBG based on laser arrays.

Chimeras

Fatemeh Parastesh et al.

Summary: Chimeras, observed in both biological and physical systems, represent an important new paradigm of nonlinear dynamics. They have been linked to various phenomena such as uni-hemispheric sleep in animals, power grid outages, and optomechanics. Future research opportunities and challenges in understanding chimeras are outlined.

Chaos Time Delay Signature Suppression Assisted by a Phased Array With Four Different Waveguide Structures

Qi Fang et al.

Summary: The proposed chaos generation scheme successfully conceals the time-delay signature (TDS) by injecting the output of an external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL) into a two-element phased array (ECSL-TPA). The ECSL-TPA allows for desired TDS suppression regardless of the waveguide structures considered, providing guidance for future design and optimization. Systematic study of key parameters reveals that appropriate settings are beneficial for TDS suppression and optimizing optical chaos, which can generate multiple independent chaotic signals with indistinguishable TDS in parallel for chaos-based applications.
