Unanimity, Coexistence, and Rigidity: Three Sides of Polarization

Summary: Political polarization is seen as a threat to democracies, but according to the Galam model of opinion dynamics, it is actually a natural outcome of open and informal discussions in a vibrant democratic society. Polarization occurs when different social groups with varying prejudices exist in a community. Contrarian and stubborn agents also contribute to polarization, but their effects differ in terms of the dynamics and atmosphere within the community. While polarization allows for the coexistence of opposite opinions, the polarization caused by stubborn agents may lead to hate and division.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the impact of a dimensionless parameter, called the neutrality parameter, on the formation of consensus in an agent-based opinion model. The results show that in general, mobility promotes the formation of global consensus, especially for extreme opinions. However, it takes significantly less time to reach a consensus on the neutral opinion.

Human movement patterns of different racial-ethnic and economic groups in U.S. top 50 populated cities: What can social media tell us about isolation?

Summary: Many studies have shown that individual socioeconomic and demographic background have a strong impact on human movement patterns. This study focuses on analyzing and comparing the movement patterns among different racial-ethnic and economic groups using social media data from the top 50 populated cities in the United States. The results indicate significant differences in activity zones and median travel distance across cities and demographic groups, and power laws are observed in both spatial and demographic aspects. The analysis also reveals that certain cities have stronger interaction with others, and economically disadvantaged populations and racial-ethnic minorities are more restricted in long distance travels, suggesting a limited spatial mobility at a local scale. Additionally, an economically-segregated movement pattern is discovered, where upper-class neighborhoods are mostly visited by the upper-class and lower-class neighborhoods are mainly accessed by the lower-class, although some racial-ethnic groups can diversify this segregated pattern locally.
