Low sintering shrinkage porous mullite ceramics with high strength and low thermal conductivity via foam-gelcasting

Lang Lin et al.

Summary: Excessive sintering shrinkage can cause deformation and cracking in porous ceramics, affecting their microstructure and properties. This study aimed to prepare low-shrinkage porous mullite ceramics using foam-gelcasting with kyanite and aluminum fluoride as additives. The inclusion of AlF3 reduced sintering shrinkage, increased porosity, and resulted in the formation of mullite whiskers. The ceramics with 30 wt% AlF3 exhibited the lowest shrinkage (3.5%), highest porosity (85.2%), compressive strength of 3.06 +/- 0.51 MPa, and thermal conductivity of 0.23 W/(m center dot K) at room temperature. The low sintering shrinkage process reduced processing costs and is significant for the preparation of high-performance porous ceramics.

Foam-gelcasting preparation and properties of high-strength mullite porous ceramics

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, mullite porous ceramics with high apparent porosity were successfully prepared using a non-toxic and economical poly-gamma-glutamic acid (gamma-PGA) gelling system and the foaming method. The effects of the foaming agent and sintering temperature on the microstructure, apparent porosity, and mechanical properties of mullite porous ceramics were investigated. The prepared mullite porous ceramics exhibited excellent properties and were validated for potential use as catalyst supports.

Preparation of porous mullite ceramic for high temperature flue gas filtration application by gel casting method

Summary: Porous mullite ceramics were prepared using gel-casting with fused mullite particles, rho-Al2O3, and polysilicon waste as binders, and starch as a pore forming agent. The addition of soluble starch increased the apparent porosity but decreased the compressive strength of the samples, while also achieving uniform pore size distribution and high gas permeability, making them suitable for high-temperature flue gas filtration applications.
